So I've vanquished the serpent guys, loaded up on new quests at Ishad N'ha and now every tim eI go walking outside I get waylaid by these Amazoni Mantraps. I go to check thje onsite walk through, thinking maybe someone else had fought them and noted how to win. The Sturgueon castle walk through just reads, "...after you've killed the mantraps, proceed to the castle...".

Man, I don't last past their first attack! One giant poison spell that hits like 8 times? Half my guys are dead before I can even do anything. So how do you fight these bad'n'nasties? any help appreciated. Heck, ya can even make fun of me for being wimpy if you'll clue me in to what I'm doing worng.

Thanks in advance!

Spartan, gagging and battered, limps to the morgue with the remains of his crew in tow...

Spartan,
These mantraps are pain for all of us. Everyone has his or her tactics for beating them. I would recommend long-distance spells - try Sun or Stone magic (Flamestrike or Meteor will do if you haven't more powerfull spells yet). And begin an attack immediately when you see mantraps, then step back cast again, step back... This worked for me. Hope this can help!

And welcome to the board! Best of luck fighting mantraps!

Sincerely Yours,
Tanda

As Tananda said, everyone develops their own tactics when dealing with these ambulatory vegetables. Where would be that incredible sense of pride of accomplishment in defeating them (and other special monsters) if I had included "my way" in the walkthroughs - and everybody used them?

Tananda uses a "retrograde offense," Sazerac prefers filtering the mantraps through the northern woods, and many players like to run past them to the Castle and go southeast along the moat. For the record, my preference is to run past them and head northeast along the Castle moat. And I applaud those who meet them steel-to-plant head-on (shudder) - and survive.

One thing not to do is attack them head on in melee combat unless you're at LEAST level 18 with powerful weapons blessed to the max. However, chances are you're not that powerful so the best way I found to go at them is long distance spells and missle weapons. They appear after you fight the band of ratling bandits a little more than halfway (am I right on the distance?) to Shurugeon Castle. Kill the Ratlings and run, any direction you can, they spawn moments after killing the ratlings. Then, after you ran a ways, turn around and SLOWLY head back to where they were. The moment they appear, start bombarding them with the most powerful magic you have. Also, flamedrop works very well. If your wizard runs out of mana, start shooting arrows, throwing knives, whatever missle weapons you have. The key to beating them in my experience, is to never let them get close. It is these creatures that have consistently torn my party into itty-bitty pieces. Be very careful, using whatever method works for you. I'd like to hear of someone beating them in close combat but I wouldn't try it.

My solo character beat them in close combat a couple of times. However, she was already quite advanced (easy to advance quickly with a solo character) and picked them off one at a time, running in between to heal up before taking on the next nasty mantrap.

I wouldn’t advise you to kill the Ratlings, otherwise you’ll never become an Assassin.
And the long-distance strategy works very good!

You could allways switch the difficulty setting for those guys. Make it easy, rather than normal or hard. And just turn it back to the original setting after you killed them.

I found that using ranged weapons and spells works the best. I just had my wizzy cast a fireball spell at them until they died(I had mana potions too). The strategies above are good, but dont forget to change the difficulty setting to make it even easier for you.

GRomi, they mean the ratlings close to the second horse, not those at the Burnt-Out House.

For my two cents, my groups usually start as Wizards, after that Bard, so everyone has several Meteorstorms or even Icestorms by the time they meet the Mantraps. There should be two groups of them, mostly four in all, so I switch spawn from often to seldom, so that I don't have to fight any more monsters at the same time, and go look for them.

Before heading out I have everyone cast several Merlin's Shields on themselves, Mana replenishes very fast, so by the time they face the Mantraps they have regained most of their Stone mana, but Merlin's Shield helps a lot against poison damage from Mantraps. I was surprised it does, as poison attacks aren't considered magic in some games, but in W&W they seem to be.

I just killed them last night...on hard mode...i ran across the moat (through the center where the drawbridge is up) then crept along the wall east until you are just on behind the east part of the bridge...you should just be able to get your cursor on them and you can send fire spells at them and they don't fight back...it takes a long time because you have to wait for your mana to recharge but on hard they are worth over 2000 each! Good luck...shirugeon castle ain't a picnic either!

I found I could defeat them by keeping at extreme range - which means running away quite a bit!
