I tried making a halfling thief, didn't out so well, he got killed as soon as he had to fight some goblins. The term "easy as goblin pie" doesn't apply to him i guess. Any tips on how to make a good halfling would be more then welcome.

I think halflings excel in being illusionists...I misght be wrong...but I thought the book explained a favorite class that each race or subrace enjoys...which gives them an edge over being anything else. Look into it. I can't be of more help at the moment. I am at work. Let me know what you find that works! I am interested to see what does make a reliable little-people.

I don't want to do the favorite class of each race, it makes the character stale and boring for me. I want a character that i personalized and has something to do with me, so that i am not just playing the game but am involved in the story. I want to Roleplay not just play. If everyone just did the favorite class every male drow would be the same, every character would be only what is "best".

Well, I agree with you. You should definately immerse yourself while playing, or the game isn't really worth playing. Maybe my first post was a bit rushed without giving much thought to it. Now that I am home, and have taken my shoes off...I can think better!
Seems to me, 3rd Edition has alot of people that are used to 2nd Edition messed up. In 3rd Edition, you have to realize what is going on with the stats that are different than before, and maybe that is why your little-guy didn't do so well. I dunno. I am only guessing at this one...but I do know that your stats have to line up the right way for a class to properly perform. I read it on here some time ago, where a guy was talking about how to effectively reduce the penalties and up the bonuses for his character by knowing how the properties of the stats coordinate with one another. |

Illusionist is the favored class for Gnomes. Rogue (thief) is favored for halflings.
Anyway, rogues shouldn't be running around in the front of combat, at least not early on. Bows are the best weapon for them to use because of their high dex bonus. You want to keep your rogue near the back and use him/her as a sniper. Which brings us to, what else do you have in your group? That can make a difference, too. |

Hi
Just upgrade your rogue bow skills and he will be a great help in battles. Here are some ideas : Find : Bracers of Archery or Gloves that increase damage Better Bows...+ 1 + 3 + 5 an so on. Get the best arrows you can pay or find...You will get lots of free arrows on the middle of the game, just loot the dead foes. Later in the game get some ENTANGLE arrows and begin to ENTANGLE all foes !!!!! This is fun !!! Buy some potion of explosions and hurl them at your enemies (it is a fireball potion) Equip him with a nice dagger or short sword (weapon finesse feat helps) and make him hide in shadows..Make him backstrike an enemie and you will see him in action !!! Dual weapons can be fun two !!! A thief should not be played as a fighter, they are for sneak attacks or missile attacks.......count him to give the first strike and let your tanks do the rest. Best wishes Ed

I'm a restart freak, so I never saw these entangle arrows... When do you get them?

I'm sure i did the stats wrong i'm nto to smart when it comes to little people.
as for my other party, i only have him... i am playign a game with a single rogue, he's doing well so far, but i think i messed up big time on him, he takes 10-15 swings at a goblin and around the 12th he will kill him. that was when he was lvl 1 and 2 but he's only a lvl 5 i stopped playign him and went back to my main game.

I think the principle is the same as in 2nd ed. rules.
Regardless of the actual class you have to concentrate on SOME atrributes and the corresponding features etc. I have a 4th lvl halfling thief in my group with 20 dex ( well - he´s not THAT strong) and features concentrating on the *classic* thieving skills and sniping. He´s doing VERY well so far - if I look at the character statistics he has earned about 35% of the groups monster xp. I love this thief because you can play him in a very *creative* way !!! When I started my 1st try at 3rd ed. rules I made the mistake of diverging the points for attrubuts and features etc. too much. This created characters able to do a lot of things but they excelled in nothing. So when the going got (really) tough I was on the losing side most of the times. Hope that helps a little ...

Why do halflings suck so much? I don't know, it's probably genetic.
