It's been so long time when I had BG in my computer and I can't find anything about Druids in BG1.

Are druids any good in BG? If I remember correctly the shapechange was pretty useless. But do they have any good spell?

I like druids but I don't like playing a char that is completely useless. I'm thinking about soloing a druid. Currently I'm going with the ranger but if you prove me that druids are good, I might use a druid then.

I'm naturefan

Druids are not much good IMHO. They lack the spell casting firepower of clerics and mages and do not fight that well either. On the other hand, at least soloing with one would be a challenge!!

What about a multi-class ranger cleric (better fighting plus cleric and druid spells i understand) and playing it like a druid.

That's my plan for one member of my multi-player-as-single party.

Well, they have some rather good spells noone but druids, high(er) level rangers and cleric/rangers have access to. They level up faster than cleric/rangers too, which means access to more of the spells as well as more spells/day. The main problem is their inability to use most items (weapons and armour).
They are by no means bad characters, you just have to find the right way to use them. Charging your mage into combat may occasionally be a good thing, but they are better at casting spells. The druid more of an in-between character, with some combat ability and some spells. Knowing when to use what aspect makes them quite powerful, and to be honest I think they have some serious advantages over both fighters and mages when it comes to roleplay value.

Ehr, to summarize, yes, they have some good spells.

I think Druids are probaly the most under rated class in BG next to the Bard. Outside, nothing can beats a druid (Lightning), even though much of the game takes place outside many of the major battles are inside were druids are at a bit of a disadvantage but they still have some good spells.

The best use is to multi class a Fighter/Druid that way you get the best of both the indoor, and outdoor battles.

If you like the Druid as a character, then by all means go ahead and play one! They aren't as powerful as they are in other games like IWD 1&2 and BG2, but don't let that stop you. You can finish the game by playing any of the classes and you can always use certain mixes of party members to make up for whatever weaknesses your PC has. So it makes sense to go ahead and play the class that you want. Also, the NPC Druids in the game don't exactly have uber stat distribution which makes them weaker than they need to be. However, you would have the ability to roll some decent stats if you chose to play a Druid yourself, which would definately make up for some of the class's disadvantages.

Druids are neat, roleplaying-wise, but they seriously fall behind the Cleric in terms of spells and equipment, at least in BG1. The only good armor Druids can wear is Ankheg Plate, which means no Ring of Protection, etc. The only decent weapons Druids can use are the Staff Mace and the Dagger of Venom....unless you kill a certain Drow, and even then you can only use Twinkle. Clerics can use the Large Shield+2, while Druids are stuck with Kiel's Buckler.

As for their spells, take a look at http://www.geocities.com/sixospades/bg/magic2.htm and compare the Cleric spells vs. the Druid spells. (Only the spells written in black or yellow apply to BG1/ToSC.)

Oh, wait--Twinkle's the Defender, right? If it is, I meant the other one--Icingdeath or whatever you want to call it. Druids cannot use the Defender.

And it's not +5, it's +3.

I don't understand why they made druids so pitiful in this game. I really think they should have some other ability (or two), so that they can at least somewhat match other classes. Druids just lack sadly in every form and way. Who would choose to be a druid over a cleric, for example? At least a cleric can fight and wear armour. Do you suppose they just made this class to satisfy the masochists among us?
