What's the average level of your party? It can happen that the level is high enough that you won't get experience for killing monsters. This can happen especially if you have a short team (less than six). They gain levels faster, but eventually, outpace the enemies. After that, advancing is slower, and you have to make sure to do as many quests as you can find. You always get points for quests, no matter what your level.

Some of those Hook Horrors are tougher than others. The Guardians, for instance, are nastier than the usual kind (there's another version of the HH that's mean, but I forget the name of them offhand).

This is true of all monsters/enemies in the game. So some will give you experience, and some won't, depending on what your level is. There isn't much you can do about it.

If you're playing at the regular difficulty, figure your party will average about level 16 by the end. You're pretty close to that right now, so it may not be surprising you aren't picking up a lot of experience.

Ilmater, apparantly in the 3rd ed DnD rules, XP are not assigned on a flat basis. Apparantly what happens is that the toughness or the monsters is compared to the toughness of your party in some way (something about a CR {challenge rating?}). If the monsters are not seen as particularly tough for your party, you don't get as many XP.

Think of it this way (sports metaphor). A first place team doesn't get much credit for beating a last place team. But if that same first place team beats another 1st place team from another division, that team will get considerably more credit based on the fact that the opponent was more of a challenge.

Same thing basically applies in IWD2. Who cares if a 12th level party whups a handful of low level goblins? But take on a party of tough drow or driders? Well that's probably more of a challenge.

Quite right. Monsters aren't exactly flat rate any more. Under the CR system, each type of monster is given a basic experience value, that varies with the level of the party. A table is used for this (in the paper & pencil version), that cross-indexes the average party level with the rating of the critter.

So a low-level group facing a tough monster will receive more for the encounter (if they survive!) than a high-level group. And yes, there is a point where a party would not receive any xp for monsters that are considered too wimpy for them.
