You might have some corrupted files. Try uninstalling then reinstalling.

And now, I'm the DUNGEON MASTER!!! Everyone take 20,000 points of damage due to blue bolts from heaven, and give me a saving throw versus spells to avoid a spontaneous sex-change. Oh, and you all lose 6 experience levels.

How exactly is it freezing? One of the problems I have with my copy of BG is that sometimes when I change maps, the game will crash to desktop. Is your problem like this? And what's the condition of your CDs?

By the way, welcome to Ironworks!

I have a real problem with movies on my system as well, and the cause of it has something to do with the sound: Sometimes, when playing a game, the sound will suddenly cut out, because (apparently) the CPU isn't sending the data to the sound card anymore, because of some bottleneck in the system. The game will still play normally, but if any movies (such as the one when you start up the game) are triggered, and the computer tries to play the movie when the sound's locked up, the whole computer freezes and I have to Restart.

This may or may not be your problem, but it at least fits what you've told us so far.

My solutions to the problem: Saving the game (a Quicksave is good enough) will help the computer "clear its throat," as will leaving one area to go to another, especially if it's a whole new map. Also, Alt-Tabbing out of the game, I can open up Windows Media Player and play an MP3, even just a second or 2 is enough. For greater insurance, I leave the MP3 playing in the background as I go back to my game and trigger the movie.

This happened with me too, with the coronation movie. I just had to save just before the movie is triggered and keep trying until it worked ok (after about 3 or 4 tries). I then did another quickave straight afterwards so I wouldn't have to go throught it again! From what I've heard this is quite a common bug, although so far this is the only movie sequence I have had trouble with (fingers crossed). However I have also had problems with the game freezing occaisionally at the start of rest periods. Its a shame these bugs were never ironed out.

It might also help to defrag your computer if you haven't already done something like that. It should help things move more smoothly.

Byrd has a good point, there. These games, with all the constant loading and saving and reloading, frag your hard drive pretty quick. I defrag mine weekly, and it's usually 15-20% fragmented , and it's all due to BG and IWD!!!

Mine tended to freeze and skip whenever the "Fight" music played. (Really annoying in big battles...) I turned the ambient sound off in the Configure Settings and took the music volume all the way out. I also installed the latest version of DirectX and the problem went away. *Knock on wood*
