Your encouragement is much appreciated, Soothsayer, but I still can’t quite get the job done even on ‘Very Easy’ setting. I made a few adjustment to my tactics and to the game settings but still I can’t do enough damage to Belhifet.

The Golems on the other hand are so stupid that they make me laugh. I remembered that I needed to reset the installation of the software – I had cleared the Override Folder for my return to Easthaven, because my copy of the game often hangs up at that point. When I replaced the Folder it gives the Golems a whole new strategy to follow, that is really dumb. They now focus entirely on my weakest character (difficult choice I know) and refuse to do anything else. All I have to do then is cast Sanctuary and the Golems just stand around looking puzzled, while the rest of my Gnomes pound them into scrap metal. Since I have played this part of the battle several times over, I tried something else for a change. I put my weak character at the top of the little staircase, then blocked the stair with another little Gnome and once again the Golems focused entirely on the target that they couldn’t reach while they were bashed to pieces.

With these stupid tin cans out of the way I can concentrate on Belhifet, but still my Gnomes can’t do enough damage because his AC is too low for us. The best I have managed is ‘Seriously Wounded’. It is disappointing to see a message on the screen like “Attack roll = 19 + 10 = 29 : Miss”. As I said before, my tactic throughout has been to save my magic scrolls and use them to win important battles. So the fact that he is totally immune to my magical attacks is the real reason I can’t win. I don’t expect my Level 1 characters to be able to fight very well against a mighty Demon, but I had hoped to find a small weakness in his magical defenses. From previous experience I thought that I had managed to get a few spells to effect him, but none have worked on this occasion. Anyone know if I can beat him with magic?

So it looks like this really could be the end for the Suicidal Gnomes!

Question Mark

I highly doubt you'll find any real magical weakness for Mr. B. As clearly as I can recall, his AC is -12 and he may be hit only by +3 weapons (or better). If you have them, you might try some summoning scrolls, preferrably Monster Summoning V or better.

I still cannot believe that you've made it that far.

Re: Belhifet, go to this site for his stats. Unfortunately, it doesn't give his general magic resistance, which I believe is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 25-50%.

How about the lightning wand? Is that any help to you? According to the stats from the website, he doesn't have electrical resistance, although fire resistance is 100% and cold is 50%. Also try acid, if you have any such scrolls remaining.

Aerich, thanks that site has lots of good information and the details on Belhifet are just what I need. As well as all that magic resistance he has great saving throws, plus he casts Improved Invisibility to boost his abilities even further. I don't have any acid attacks remaining apart from a few arrows that can't hit him. I did try taking a few Wand shots at him but he always saves - maybe I'll try some more. Just to make thing really difficult he cheats as well. I summoned up a couple of Umber Hulks who managed to get through his defence, the screen reported 'Belhifet Confused' but he carried on as normal. Another thing, is he classiefied as Undead, I assumed not but quite a few spell are 'ineffective' against him.

One other thing I am considering before I admit defeat is to fill the sixth slot with an extra Level 1 Gnome, to boost my attacking options. I would quite like a Bard to sing for us and record the story of our great adventure. A singing Gnome might just make enough differance.

Sorry, gnomes can't be bards. But bring in a bard anyway. 5 pint-sized heroes taking on a devil should make enough of a story to draw a bard of a different race (maybe even a bard higher than lvl 1).

Yeh, Aerlich I was just messing about with the idea - if I could have had a Gnome Bard I would have done it at the start. Maybe I could use Dalekeeper to make one especially for this party. Oh, and if I remember correctly Grog said he had one for Auriel's Bane so I could look there.

Yea go for it. Why can't gnomes be bards? It will just be an unusual gnome. For salvatore fans, not only did Pikel the dwarf dual class, but he became a druid! I bet Drow can't be rangers under these rules, yet look at Drizzt! Go for it, we won't hold it against you.

as a subrace of elves, Drow have always been able to be rangers, alignment however was a major factor in preventing them from ever becoming that class (but no rule said they specifically could not become a ranger). However Drizzt had his exp shifted from fighter (20) to ranger (18) in the novels which is similar to dualclassing.

There is a precedent for non-standard bards, I think a thief/illusionist is the closest you can reach in a "pure" game, but in the books about Finder Wyvernspur he does pick up a halfling bard (his clerics are bards) so you could DaleKeeper it in and justify him/her as a cleric of Finder Wyvernspur.

errrgh what a blunder.

I misread your last post and I thought you already killed Mr. B. That's why I was surprised that you want to reload.
Now I see that you only killed Mr. P. That's why my previous post mighhtve seemed strange.
Anyway, good luck there in the last battle.
