In my slow moving not-on-my-computer test game, I've reached DE. My solo Cleric/Ranger is lvl 8/7. I was proud of my victory over the lizard king, but then I realized that Sheemish and the other prisoners disapear if I rest after the fight. It was tough, but I managed to get past the talona priests and to the prisoners, but I was unable to kill the trolls (no fire spell ready, and no kegs). I made a strategy to leave a downed troll in the fog of war to get by them. I then got to the prisoners and rested.
After resting I was able to kill all the trolls and rescue Egenia, but those townsfolk still arent doing anything! As this is always a glitchy part, have I jinxed it, or is there something I haven't yet done? I really want conlan's hammer for Y, though I may be able to do without. Err... help? |

Spoiler
* * * The non-important villagers always just stick around for a while. After a few rest periods, they usually leave. It's not broken, they just aren't very smart. The problem for you is: 1) If Sheemish left without you talking to him, I don't think you get the XP or the hammer for saving him. 2) If you rested before talking to the villagers at the exit to lvl 2, you don't get the XP for saving them. Neither of them is critical, but the XP gain is fairly significant for that stage of the game, especially for small parties, which you definitely have. If you're not averse to using a flail, I believe the stunning flail (behind Presio) is a non-random item. I'd be interested to hear how you do against Y, running a solo game without a bow-enabled archer.

I don't think Shemeesh or the villagers will disapear if your rest after killing the Lizard King with your Cleric/Ranger. You'll fully recover in 16 hours, which is a short enough time. If you're worried, you can leave and rest outside the DE entrance. Then come back.
I once returned to DE after finishing Severed Hand to pick up some items I purposely left in a chest, and the villagers were still there! |

Sheemish might not, but the villagers near the exit to the 2nd level often do. You miss out on a good bit of experience if you rest right away after killing the Lizard King.
Yes, some of them stick around, but the important one (the little girl who talks to you and gives XP) may leave. Um. Maybe it's been fixed with one of the various patches. The first (and only) time I ever rested right after and missed the XP was when I had IWD without HoW, although I had the v.1.06 patch.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Luckily I saved after I had deposed of the lizard king, so I got the experience award after all. And quite a chunk it was at the time.
The other thing that bugs me a bit is that Egenia (the priestess of Illmater) never turns up at the temple in Kuldahar after you're through with DE. Kind of weird. |

I've heard that the whole Egenia thing was supposed to have a more complex quest, but it was taken out or not fully developed. It is weird that she never makes it back to Kuldahar.

Not to spoil you on IWD2, but she has some unfinished business in enemy territory.
I just found out why it hadn't worked: I wasn't talking to Sheemish! He was in a secluded area that I hadn't explored. Alls well, and I got the flail and hammer. |
