Summons on the walkway (and gate) down from the bank, everyone equipped with missile weapons, and area effect spells comes to mind. Never was a heavy buff-user :p

*shrugs*

I just used summons to tank the bears while I whittle them down with missile fire and magic.

ElfBane,

EDIT: (minor HoW spoiler, below.)

I, too, used summons to run interference while I pummeled them with ranged weapons.

Another tactic is to run laps with your character who has boots of speed, while the rest target the bear. Ya gotta be careful where you run, though: Don't open up any new area!

If you have good ranged weapons (I had 3 excellent slingers, magical long bow, magical short bow, plus a Bard singing War Chant) then you can take down a bear from long range before he closes to melee. You can push the odds in your favor with this tactic by casting a Skull Trap in the path you know he will take.

EDIT: Err... let me caveat that. The tactics in the first and second paragraph are ones I used against the spirit animals on B.I. But the bears and tactics I am thinking of in the last paragraph are bears you meet later in HoW. I do not know how they match up with the spirit bear.

Hope this helps.

Fire. Spells. More fire. I mean, all of that fur (even if it is spirit) has to burn, right? Have tanks. stand in front of the mage, healers at teh ready. Don't let them get to the weaker characters.
