I completed the very short Heart of Winter then I discovered the add on called the trials of something. My question is how do I get back to Lonelywood so I can start the trials. Every time I ask the Barbarian to take me to the mainland he tells me to kill the dragon first.

In order to play Trials you have to Start HoW over. The best thing to do is start a new game of HoW with the party you just used and go to inn in lonely wood and talk to the halfling.
