Hi
I've read the book (1st of the trilogy only), but not played the game yet. Are the two alike in plot, characters etc? Does reading the book give you any advntages or even spoil the game? TIA

No, no, and no. Reading the entire trilogy won't spoil the game plot nor does it give you any advantages. None of the trilogy characters make ANY apperance in the game - no Drizzt, no Wulfgar, no Bruennor.

There are a few common threads, e.g. barbarians do appear in both, but really the two have very little in common.

Also some of the items are the same, and some of the important items needed for the completion of the game appear in the books.

I'm fairly new to the game and have recently started reading the first book as well. I've heard that the game was created from the setting written in the book. If that's true, and I suspect it is, then the programmers did an amazing job of recreating it. I haven't seen any specific character crossovers, but I'm impressed by how the monsters in the game act just like the ones in the book, in terms of intelligence level and dialogue.
My $0.02.

I'm almost done with the first Icewind Dale book too, and I agree, they really did do a good job.

Played the games before I read the books. I got the books because I enjoyed the games so much. Enjoyed the books emensely. I am glad they didn't take the plot from the books.

That's what I like the most about IWD1, the beautifully detailed icy settings. I did read some of the books, but only recently, so a long time after finishing the game
