One of the things that surprised me about IWD is that there is no xp for disarming a trap, nor for reading a spell scroll. Is this a 2nd ed./3rd ed. rules difference? Did they add this to BGII when it really isn't true to D&D or vice-versa? Just curious...

3rd Ed is a bit of a mystery to me at the moment, but I can say that 2nd Ed tried to integrate some additional methods of gaining XP which didn't involve smacking some large monster with enormous MR over the head. Some of the individual classes (perhaps all as I haven't looked at this in some time) had additional, specific ways, to earn experience for that class.

I didn't even know that BG2 used it, as I don't think any other IE game does.

That's an interesting question. I thought that BG1 incorporated 2nd ed. rules, but it does not give additional experience for finding/disarming traps, unlocking things. BG2 does give exp for these actions, but I thought that BG2 used 2nd ed. rules also. I believe IWD1 used 2nd ed. rules, but you don't get additional exp for traps/locks. (Hey, I'm an old 1st ed. guy, so I don't know boo about 2nd ed. or 3rd ed.) I think I'll just go crawl into a hole for a while; my brain hurts.

BG2 would appear to use a more definitive version of 2nd Ed than BG1. The basic rules are essentially the same, but lots of it haven't been implemented. The kits in BG2 do not appear in the core rules, whilst the additional XP "motivations" do. Go figure.

I prefer 1st Ed too, K.

I don't know boo(no, not the hamster!) about 2nd or 3rd ed rules either. I can barely remember my PnP days. But I do know a druid in Kulduhar who can help with that headache.

Considering the a level 4 scroll give 4000 XP, it would have been unbalancing given the low BG1 XP cap. I guess they wanted to prevent people exploiting it and getting to the cap in chapter 5. (You cant get most spells Pre baldurs gate IIRC).

After all, a real DM can modify the encounters depending on how powerful you are, a computer program can only work within what its been given.

in pnp the xp rewards are static, unlike in bg2 (100xp for using a thief skill like hiding in shadows, finding and disarming a trap, picking pockets etc, and 2 xp per gp collected) while wizards (and bards) get 50xp per spell level they cast. druids and priests get 100xp per spell level they cast (to further their deities' ends, not merely healing a party member) and mages get 500xp per spell level when scribing scrolls not the 1k per spell lvl that bg2 gives, there are more xp awards than this but these are the easiest to think of off the top of my head
