I have recently started a new party - & got to the Vale of Shadows. My lead character has just reached 3rd level, but when I try and go up - as soon as I am asked to select a new weapon proficiency the game crashes with the message "Assertion failed in ObjCreature.cpp at line number 15890". I have the patch installed - V.1.06.

Can anyone help? I spent AGES rerolling stats on this party to get decent ones - please don't tell me I have to do it all again...

What type of install did you do? Full, recommended or minimum?
Are you only playing IWD or do you have HOW installed as well?
Which operating system are you running? Win98, Win2k, WinMe or WinXP?

It sounds like some file got corrupted either in the installation of the patch or in the installation of the game.

Try downloading the patch again. Back up your saved games, characters and any custom portraits. Then uninstall the game, defrag your hard drive, and reinstall IWD, and then the v1.06 patch. If you have HOW, you can forget about installing the v1.06 patch. Instead you should install the v1.41 patch for HOW. If you also have TOL, then simply install TOL after HOW. Do not, under any circumstances, install the v1.06 patch after HOW is installed. Same goes for TOL and either the v1.06 patch or the v1.41 patch. Also make sure that your cd is clean. Let me know if this does not solve your problem.

Your characters aren't lost ... go back to your last auto-save, and load from there and then export your characters. I suggest that you back them up into a separate folder somewhere to be safe.

Thanks for the tip - looks like it was a corrupt save - I went back to a save before the last autosave and everything's fine now!

On with the show....!
