Didn't mean to get your ire up, Grungi. Like I said, I don't know what happened to Garrick in your case. I was just guessing. I read on another site that letting (or even helping) the companion of a party member get killed DOES work, if you want one of them, but not the other. I might decide to keep Dynaheir and forego Kivan, as I like everything about her. I, too, favor a balanced party. The 5 characters I have now are:

My main character, a female half-elf (Skie's portrait), who is a fighter/mage
Imoen
Jaheira
Khalid
Minsc

Thanks for the tips about Monster Summoning and Fireball spells. I know the battles will get a lot hairier and combat tactics are a big part of this game, and there are basic things I still have to get better at. For instance, if there's a way to have a PC launch an offensive spell at approaching enemies as part a group attack, I haven't figured it out yet. Another sticking point is that, the baddies always approach so fast, even with immediate and frequent pausing, there's never a few spare seconds for someone to cast a protective or buff spell. I've already had 3 of my 4 (at the time) party members incapacitated by Hold Person and panicked by Horror in two different fights, and things to come like having members turned against me or getting petrified are causes for concern. But nobody said that saving the world from an onslaught of evil would be a walk in the park. Certainly, the challenge is part of the fun.

u couldnt get my ire up if you buttraped khalid and fed him to your pet worg actually id probably laugh, nah dont worry about that, im just trying to be clear on what happened to me, which is hard cos i cant remember it

i forgot to mention HASTE cast it and suddenly you cast very fast indeed doesnt just make you faster and hit faster, magic casts quick too, and the way to do it is to cast spells before the enemy approach and hit them preferably when you got monsters surrounding them so they are distracted, btw you wont have a challenge in baldurs gate till you hit durlags tower then things get hard, you will have to play good tactics there or you'll never make it through

Just to clarify, Haste (and Slow) have no effect on magic; casting time, time it takes for the spell to reach its target, or the spell's duration. Always read the spell descriptions, they're even correct most of the time.

If you're going to be using spells to augment your combat skills, I cannot overemphasize the importance of scouting, either via Invisibility, Sanctuary, or a Stealthed Thief or Ranger. If you know where the enemy is, what type of enemy it is, and how many of them there are, the battle is half won already. Also, if you're using summons, make sure your summons get the benefit of your buffing spells as well.

Durlag's Tower, huh? OK, I'll be on my guard. Yeah, I thought I'd read that Haste doesn't work on magic. As the manual states, "Spellcasting and spell effects are not sped up." On the plus side, though, it says "Note that this spell negates the effects of a Slow spell." Appreciate the combat tips.

eh????? in my game im sorry but when i cast a haste suddenly im able to cast all spells way quicker than before, i was kinda assuming that would be the same for everyone else ??? well anyway dunno about other peoples games but in mine when i cast haste on spellcasters they cast way faster and i get off 4 spells in the time it normally takes to cast 1

stupid manual, bah why does it alwyas have to be different in my games??? still its a bonus for me, everytime i haste i can cast my entire arsenal of spells, looks like noone else with BG can, muahahahaha (and no i havent modded anything its basic game so dont ask me how it works!)

I believe you, and have no explanation for it, either. You're not playing a mod, and I'm sure you're playing with the patch like I am. Maybe the game just likes you. Could its artificial intelligence extend that far? Haven't gotten Haste yet, but I'll be looking to see if it speeds up spellcasting, though I'm expecting that it won't, in my case. It'd be better for me if spells were cast immediately, even though the casters' animations and vocalizations can be a delight. It's tempting to play it with just archers and fighters, but I like casting spells, particularly offensive ones, and magic-users can come in handy, and may even be necessary at some point. Oh well. It's good that I have more gameplay time to get better at things before the combat gets crazy.
