I saved the slaves and exited the door that led to a small gully. When i go out the exit to the SE i get an error that reads: (An assertion failed in infinity.cpp at line number 1763 Programmer says: Demand for WED file failed)..........Is my game over? I was doing so well.

The best suggestion that I can tell you is to call Interplay's number and tell them:
assertion failed in infinity.cpp at line number 1763 Programmer says: Demand for WED file failed They will be able to walk you through the steps to fix it.
