It is a German word, or a corruption of the German word "ober". It means "over" IIRC. So a Uber weapon or fighter would be "over the top" or overpowered. Since you are new there are some more terms you will see if you frequent gaming forums. There are 2 basic types of players,, roleplayers and powergamers(there is some overlapping). Roleplayers play a game for the role and the story, and don't usually care about how long it takes. Powergamers goal is to get as powerfull as possible, quickly as possible, in order to win, usually as fast as possible(they make liberal use of cheats). You will see the term "cheese" or "cheesy". It means the use of a tactic or game feature used to defeat a monster that you could not use in real life. A "cheat" is a procedure where you have to manually enable manufacturer test routines to introduce "uber" weapons or abilities to your characters. Roleplayers will use cheese, but (almost) never cheat. Powergamers will do whatever is neccessary to win as quick as possible. Neither approach is "wrong" or "right". You pays your money, you takes your pick. Enjoy the game!

Adding to Bredalbane's story: Roleplayers will try to avoid cheese as well. For instance: while facing a dragon, you can try and Cloudkill it to death, but if you would be roleplaying you would know that a dragon would know (still there? ) that someone was slowly murdering him in a sneaky way.
My point? Dragons are smart, don't think easy about them

Just a note that Powergamers does not equate to Cheaters. In fact, Powergamers tend to be insulted when called Cheaters.

A Powergamer abuses, but not break, the rules of the game to his/her advantage. This frequently mean the usage of Cheese.

Cheese: Methods which are either overkill, unfair or unrealistic, but legitimate in the game.

There is NO glory in being a Powergamer, if he/she cheats. It defeats the whole purpose of trying to be the best. A Powergamer seeks glory be any legitimate means possible.

Thus I repeat, a Powergamer does not mean a Cheater.

You are saying that Powergamers don't cheat!?!?!? This is almost incredible!! Cheating is almost a requisite of the ethos !!
I am willing to see a walkthru from you, THAT USES NOTHING BUT CHEESE, from BG1 to ToB, that can be done by an average player, and come close to a Powergamers time.
Actually, Bredalbane, most powergamers don't cheat, simply because doing so would invalidate the glory (ha) of beating Difficult Battle X.
Player 1 beats Difficult Battle X by using Project Image, Mislead, Nature's Beauty, stacks of Traps (placed according to Reload knowledge) and 100+% Physical Immunities until the cows came home.
Player 2 beats Difficult Battle X by continually pausing the game and Ctrl-Ring all of his party members until the cows came home.
Player 1 is what I would call a Cheesy Powergamer. Player 2 is what I would call a cheater.

A complete walkthrough? Don't have the time to sit down and compile one. Besides... new cheese pops up now and then.

I do not usually like to brag, but however, bear in mind that this old fart (meaning me) virtually knows all the BG2 cheese and has applied most of them before.

I have defeated Improved Demogorgan in 7 rounds without cheating or using traps.

I have soloed on Insane without cheating.

I know how to kill multiple Beholders and/or MindFlayers with one blow without cheating.

I know how to kill Arkanis Gath when working for the Shadow Thieves without cheating.

I trashed Improved Irenicus on the first try without cheating.

Dragons die within three rounds, spells or no spells, without cheating or using traps.

I fought Improved Kangaxx and killed him with a damn Sling of Everand without using Time Stop or cheating.

I can defeat the Ritual Grove within a turn, without cheating.

I can defeat the Oasis within 3 rounds, without cheating.

I know how to legitimately max out your XP before leaving Saradush, without cheating.

I could go on and on and on, but I hope my point has been made clear by now. I can and know how to powergame (I do occasionally roleplay as well), but I do not cheat...

... because I am not a cheater.

Hell, I even "handicap" myself by not using traps or Cloudkill.

[/QUOTE]I deleted the post before I saw this reply, Six. I deleted 'cause I shouldn't have written it after a few brews, and the post approaches flame. I myself use cheese at times, but not the ole CLUA. Anyway, I spoke harshly to a board God, and apologize. Happy New Year!

Everything you describe here I would call "a good player", not a powergamer. So I must not understand the definition of "powergamer". I always imagined "powergaming" as liberal use of CLUA and other powerups to "just get to the end".

Imagine the following scenerio if you will.

Kangaxx, the Demi-Lich.

A roleplayer will assume that his party does not know about the Imprisonment spells, and will have one heck of a time trying to deal with it.

A powergamer will not only know about it, but will prepare countermeasures before experiencing it.

A powergamer is essentially a player who plays an omniscient character. His character... is The One, with the ability to forsee the future and prepare for it, logic and reality be damned.
