Besides mice, cd-drives and diskette-drives are some of the parts of a computer that breaks rather easily. it can be anything from a broken mechanism, an off-focus laser to a burned out electric motor.

It could be as easy as saying "Its broken". You should have it checked by the vendor or just buy a new one. CD Drives is very cheap nowadays.

I had the same problem about a week ago. My CD drive just stopped reading the disk, or it'd take FOREVER to load, or it'd start to load, and then just stop!
Before I took the whole tower and tossed it out the window, I thought to try...

"The Old Nintendo Trick".
Nobody can claim starting it, and everyone who ever owned one did it. If a game wasn't playing right you'd either take the game and blow vigorously at the opened end, or into the machine itself. You had to make sure you were nice and dry, 'cause you don't want to get sensitive components wet. (Like blowing into the console is real techinical.)

I opened the cd slot and blew gently and dryly a few times. It was better. I got the CD to boot... and then stop. So I swore a few times, opened it up again and blew harder... and it worked!

I realise that it would have been better(and more hygenic) to buy a drive cleaner CD, which is what I'm telling you to do, but it was a good way to vent my frustrations on an inanimate machine for a few minutes.

The end.

I remember that Nintendo trick.. In the end, when you were having fun of the Nintendo for a few years you'd have to blow every single time, when you wanted to play, and vigorously as well, if you wanted the game to work Brings back good memories! *Duck Hunt!!*
