I must have really missed something here. What is "vorpal"? A type of damage, a weapon? Please, describe and inform!!!

It means it auto-kills them. Vorpal weapons typically have a % chance for it and typically allow a save vs death at a certain penalty. Planetars have a vorpal weapon, too, I believe. I believe Bosses are immune to Vorpal, however.

there are are 3 in the game, an ax and 2 swords. one doesn't allow any saving throw making it espcially nasty.

vorpals were originally forged by the githyanki, a race of evil men originally conquered by the illithids and driven into slavery for centuries until their successful rebellion. they now dwell in the astral plane and can travel to the prime material through innate ability. these +3 non-aligned 'silver swords' {TotSC} were weilded only by gith knights of seventh level or higher, and the +5 variety is saved for the supreme leaders in their astral castles {the loss of which will result in the formation of a quick recovery party }.
to the game, as mentioned above, it will deliver a killing strike with a low percentile roll - though other weapons within the game {eg planetars' swords} will still deliver 'vorpal hit's and some have better chances than others they co-operate with red dragons too and even use the older ones as transport carriers ![]() |

The word Vorpal comes from the poem 'Jabberwocky', by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Unfortunately there are lots of "new" words in that poem, so it's hard to derive the exact meaning. Most of the "known" "new" words are actually derived from two other words (e.g. chuckle + snort = chortle), so likely "vorpal" is too. See what you can make of it:
'Twas brillig and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock; my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought- So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O Frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!" He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. |

a vorpal sword is a +3 weapon that auto-kills on any natural die roll of 18-20, a sword of sharpness is similar, but it severs limbs on a roll of 19-20 (being only a +1 weapon-IIRC)

What I'd like to see in the game is a vorpal weapon that Priests could use. The Wyvern's Tail Morningstar would be a good candidate; if the great big spike on the tip penetrates your helmet, you're dead. That would mean some type of Piercing damage, of course, which violates the Cleric ethos--but hey, the change wouldn't make the weapon any more pointy than it is already.

And where in ToSC are vorpal weapons mentioned?
- sorry, i meant SoA and i believe the rules for vorpals are different from good ol' D&D as they do not automatically kill on their chances to inflict a 'vorpal srike' {some weapons having much better chances than 15%, which would be a roll of 18-20}, this merely allows them a chance to slay if the target then fails a save vs. death {some weapons also having better penalties to this roll than others} |
