Back in the 80's I used to play AD&D. And loved it. I bought all the books and moduals.
Today I found this site and I've been reading here for hours.
I am about to go out an buy BG2 and Throne of Bhaal.

Is throne of bhaal an expansion, like lord of destruction is to diablo II?
Also I was hoping someone could clue me in on what all to do to get the most from my game. For instance, after I install BG2, what patches do I need?
(or which patch is the best)
What downloads to you suggest?
It seems like there are many to choose from....
Should I bother with an editor yet.

This game seems really awesome, I'm sure I will spend alot of time at this forum too.

Another question-
Is Neverwinter based on AD&D too?
What others are there?
These AD&D games are cool to me, because I already know all the monsters and rules, etc...

I noticed Valen the vampire mod.
Should I/Can I begin from the start with mods?
Is there a list of other mods somewhere to choose from?

First of all, Welcome to Irnoworks

Yes Throne of Bhall is an expansion, but I think you can play it without Shadows of amn.You can play it with your Shadows of Amn party, Items and Exp.

To get some good mods for SOA try out weimers mods at http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~weimer/bgate/ I suggest the solafein mod.

Yes, download the shadowkeeper editor, as the Bronze Pantaloons come in very handy in TOB.

Yes, the game is awesome.

Yes, Neverwinter Nights is based on AD&D rules(I think), another good game to do with Baldurs gate is Baldurs Gate Tales of the Sword Coast(a great game).

Hope it helps!
ADD]yes you should start from the beginning with most mods, and the link to valen is above(kickass vamp)

Now what about patches?

Seems I need one or two to keep bugs out....

First off, also WELCOME!!!

Get the most recent patch for ToB BEFORE you get the mods.

Also, Fiend, you need SoA to play ToB.

The game is even way more complicated than I could imagine.
As are these forums.

This stuff is hard to figure out and I need help.
In the Soa forum someone mentioned that there is a patch that should go first and then a bug fix, I think it said version 3.something.

I have an idea.
Does this board allow for sticky topics?

I think the patch and the bug fix should be something everybody wants for their game right?
But there are dozens of different types from different links, why not have a sticky topic to hook a person up right away to avoid the confusion?

(Is there a reason why anyone would not want the best patch and fixpack?)
Why not delete the links to the outdated stuff?
300 pages of data is too much. I want to play the game, not play the discussion forum for weeks first.

A few sticky topics up front would eliminate alot of multiple FAQ posts.

Another question, offtopic- I just walked out of Level one accidentally without finishing the quest, is it possible to go back now?

The forums are simple enough when you get used to them. The best of BG2 is yet to come however.

You have SoA and ToB installed, right? You dont need the SoA patch since its already in ToB, but there is an official ToB patch you should get, especialy if you have winXP. It should be on www.bioware.com .

Theres also the Baldurdash fixpack, damn near essential if you ask me. It takes out lots of scripting errors and prevents some exploits. Get it from http://members.rogers.com/mrkevvy

We did have stickies at some point, but we had a lot of server trouble a while back and were still not quite back up. Personaly, I care more about the search function than stickies.

Because there are thousand of threads and no mod in there right mind would volunteer for the job. Besides, some of the non-serious topics back there are hilarious. If search was up id find some.

What quest? The acorns? Thats done later. Besides that, getting out *is* the quest.

Ok. thanks.

Yea, I got bioware patch.
I think I need the baldurdash thing.
My game froze up when I went to sleep in the 7 vales inn.

I could move my mouse (hand pointer thingy) around, and could hear the voices going on, but had no control over anything.
So I exited and quit.

If that happens again, is there a way I can go in thru windows xp somehow to save the game(for instance cntrl alt delete, then somehow into the BG files?)
Or am I basically screwed when that happens-
Gotta remember to quick save often I guess.

Man, this is a fun game though.
How long does it take to beat? Like 200 hours?

That depends on how you play the game. If you want to beat it fast, you could probably do it in about 50 hours. That would be about the most boring thing you could do, however. about 2/3 the content of the game is Side quests, optional area's, places to explore, etc. that don't have much, if anything, to do with the actual central quest. If you include all the side quests and stuff, for your first time through I'd say BG2 takes like 100-150 hours (depending how much you die, screw up, and what all you find)

the game has good replay value, there are lots of quests you can only do with some characters, and different ways to do them. PLus a lot of the fun is making amazing characters and trying them out.
::coughs:: half-orc kensai::cough cough::

Have fun man!
