Ok, so you say that those guys from the start are enough for the first time around?
Ill take minsc, jaheira, yoshimo, imoen and ill be a specialized mage. Everything from fighting to traps should be covered by this warparty. But yesterday i played it till out of the first dungeon and something tells me i wont see imoen for a while so i need to replace her with someone, maybe viconia which answers my next question which is that jaheira is a druid and misses some good spells i used in icwd2 like restoration. Should i just hope that there are not too many undead level draining monsters??

only other partybuild would be something like this:
me:specialized mage(probably conjur divination is for nothing i think and jan can learn identify etc true seeing,... )

canonfodder: minsc

Optional firstlinehelpoutandhealer: jaheira

traps and ranged fight: yoshimo

support mage/thief: jan

and here maybe viconia for clerical spells or i will trade jaheira for her.
Could this ship hold together? I kinda forgot when i was buying this game that party members can hate each other. Ohh where are the times when six brave adventurers in icwd2 were fightning against wvil with no arguing betwen each other??

Druids are pretty damn good in BG2, certainly powerful enough to not be a void in your party. Viconia and Jaheira don't HATE each other, but before going to get Viconia, try to scout around the promenade, I guarentee you'll find a good choice...

you dont mean that cleric/mage do you. Maybe i didnt play the whole game through but these are 2.5rules which means she will be leveling like 9/9 10/9 10/10 etc. I dont see how she could have spells powerfull enough that compare to high level ones that she WONT get.

I wanted to ask something else as well. When i searched for tips for character building(i was curious you cant blame me for that:-_), i saw that some of them were talking about making a kensai and then dualing him into mage but i dont see the advantage of that course. A fighter should fight in the field and wizard should be faaar away behind the lines and pummeling the enemy with spells, so what is their charm?

Advice from yet another quarter for you, Saverico. There's been a lot of good advice posted in this thread so far, but:

Oh yes you do. Later on, when you've memorized where all the Traps are, and you know which ones require Knock and which can be bashed open with Strength alone, you might be safe running through the game with somebody like Nalia, or even with no genuine Thief at all, but for your first few games, you need a Thief, and a good one, too.

Oh? And just what would you call Cernd? Even Haer'Dalis has his supporters, unlike the hapless Shapeshifter.

Regarding the Jaheira/Viconia decision: Both Clerics and Druids are capable of being your party's only Priest--Clerics are a bit better at it, but Jaheira has an edge over other Druids, since she has a couple of spells that regular Druids do not. With that said, though, Each class has at least a couple of KICKASS spells that are not available to the other class, so you should at least consider having a representative of both sides of the Priest scroll in your party. A character who is half Cleric and another character who is half Druid would do admirably.

Regarding the Kensai->Mage: A lot of people play BG going for the very most powerful party setup they can think of. This usually tends to involve choosing Dual-class possibilities where the one class can practically negate the disadvantages of the first. One example of this is the Kensai->Mage: Kensai have decided to forego wearing armor in order to deliver faster, more deadly attacks, so Kensai are forbidden to wear armor. But according to the usability restrictions in the game, Mage Robes do not count as armor, so Kensai->Mages are allowed to wear them....and since a Mage wouldn't wear anything that blocked Wizard spellcasting anyway, a Kensai->Mage is essentially a pureclassed Mage that spent a few levels learning how to REALLY carve people up. The most popular setup for unimaginative powergamers is a Kensai Dualed to Mage at Level 13, with a certain weapon in their main hand, and a certain other weapon in their offhand. And all of these characters are exactly the same. Cookie-cutters.

About Fighter/Mages in general: Overall, it's very good to have characters who can both fight and cast spells. You get more use out of them: A Mage can be incredibly useful in taking out powerful enemies very quickly, but against a long string of low-level enemies, they're practically useless. A Fighter/Mage shines in both areas: Casting Lower Magic Resistance and Greater Malison against the Dragon, and employing hack & slash against the cannon fodder.
