OK calling all experienced thieves here...
since i do not have TOB at the moment my solo mage project is on hold so i am making an evil party to terrorise the farum... one issue ofcoarse is the high cost of goods to an evil party. but the few goods i'd wish to purchase are rather expensive when sold to an evil party. However, shoplifting is a way around this. Could somebody please give me a quick crash coarse in this? I don't really know much about shop lifting except i believe it depends on your pickpocket ability and possibly has a random effect. are there any shops that cannot be stolen from? a number of times? things i can do to my character to make them better at it? thanks! edit: also, can swashbucklers be dual-classed into a fighter/theif?? and if so, upon becoming a dualed fighter/thief, can they gain grand mastery?? Yeah it's pickpockets. Potions of master thievery are very important. If you get caught that shop is of no use to you for the rest of the game, so get pickpocket % as high as you can.
Swashbucklers can be dualled to fighters and can gain grand mastery. It strikes me as a great combination as the swashbuckler bonuses are great for a fighter.

Certain stores can't be stolen from though.
Like the bonus merchants, you can't steal from them.

IIRC, it is not possible to steal anything from the adventurers mart. However, if you want to be REALLY cheap you can go to one of the thieves guilds, steal items from them then sell them back. You can repeat this as much as you want because they will accept stolen goods (anything you pickpocket cannot be sold at most other stores). Once you do this for a bit you'll have enough money to buy anything at the Adventurers Mart or from the bonus merchants.
And I'd recommend you quick save each time before you pickpocket in case you fail, otherwise as mentioned above you will not be able to shop at that store anymore. - post |

Do NOT let your score go above 255%, in anything. Above 255, the number actually wraps around and becomes negative, resulting in failure every time.

You'd have to down many a potion of master thievery, or dump all your points into one thing to get it that high...
Best is to just get everything to 100, a single class thief can do that easily, and by the endgame my Assassin had 100s in everything save for Open Locks and Find Traps. (but, single class thieves can be rather underpowered at times)

DANGER! DANGER! SPOILER BELOW! . . . . . . . . . You 'can' steal a valuable ring from the Adventurer's Mart. Although it's a random thing, I've been caught by both Bernard at the Copper Coronet, and Gorch at Mae'Var's Guild despite very high 'pick pocket' buffed scores. Good targets for shoplifting include; the Armorer / Fletcher in Waukeen's Promenade (2x Full Plate, 80x Arrows of Dispelling, 200(?)x Arrows of Biting), Roger in the Temple District Sewers, and the merchants at Trademeet. |

there are barely any items worth stealing in the game. You will find yourself being forced to steal cheap long swords that you can sell back for only a few gold. You could make a looting party where you break into every house and take all the gold, although you want make that much. An assassin party could be pretty cool though. Your whole party could be of thieves.

I've been thinking I should play a majorly evil campaign where my last action before leaving Athkatla for good in the end game is to go on a major crime spree - going shoplifting and massacring the entire store when I get caught.

![]() SPOILER . . . . . . . . . . . Not that the best weapons in the game are stealable, but there are tons of very useful ones that are. If I'm not mistaken, weapons that are stealable include; Azuredge +3, Stonefire +3, Tansheron's Bow +3, Arrows of Dispelling, Arrows of Piercing, Arrows of Biting, Bolts of Biting, Blackblood +3, Firetooth Dagger +3, The Sleeper +2, Ras +2, Blade of Roses +3, Mauler's Arm +2, Martial Staff +3, Rod of Smiting +3, Staff of Earth +2, Sling of Seeking +2, Spear of Withering +4, and the Dwarven Thrower +3. Throw in some pretty darn good stealable scrolls, shields, potions, and as noted above the Belt of Inertial Barrier, and then on top of that you've got items such as the Necklace of Missiles and the Cloak of Displacement. For kicks, recharge your wands and rods. |
