Well, I just rolled probably the best roll ever.

This is in BG1:

18 / 97 str
18 dex
18 const
18 int
18 wis
9 charisma

Thats on a human fighter. Total of 99 points.

Makes me wonder if 18, 18, 18, 18, 18, 18 is possible.

It is, just very improbable.

Our dm prefers the 4d6, ignore one, select stats. And I liked it, it allows for a medium to good numbers.
But if I wanted to have a certain set of abilities in pnp, I would have it. Or wouldn't play at all . The rules are not there for fun. They are there for our convenience and to keep things balanced (as far as it is possible). If house rules prove more fun, then we will play by house rules even if it sends balance down the toilet.

Eh, you've rolled 99? With 18/97!? Quite nice! Please don't tell me how long it took...

Well from the time I loaded up BG1 to the time I rolled it it only took maybe half an hour.

But seeing as its the best roll I've ever got in playing this game, I guess you could say it took years.

i recently read in a thread somewhere why they did this, although I don't remember where it was and I don't exactly remember why they did it. I think it had something to do with cheating or every one putting their strength up to 18 or something for any class...I really don't remember. Do a search for the thread if you want.
Actually, the percentile roll for 18 strength exists only for Fighters(And Fighter multiclasses and for any character Dual Classed from Fighter, and then because that's part of D&D rules. :3 (I had a friend who had an ancient rulebook, ok, not that ancient, it was 2nd Ed., but the thing was rather beat up)

Rangers are a bad test case. Specialist mages like Illusionists would be a better test. If the class minimum is 16 you should get 16 93.5% of the time if it bumps up the statistic, 56% of the time if it re-rolls.
I ran this test with an Illusionist. 16 comes up pretty close to 50%, after 100 rerolls, so I'm confident that it's a re-roll if you are below the class minimum, NOT a bump-up.

I dunno....the point-buy system of games like NWN or Wiz8 looks pretty good in comparison.
