What is the purpose to all these books on shelves all over the place. Does having the book increase the Bards lore or do I have to read them to improve anything or is it just an entertainment factor????????

Ther are two or three books that are quest items, but essentially most NORMAL books serve only as backgound story, and will not improve character abilities and the like.

it gives you an idea of the world of faerun which leads to Bg2 and maybe BG3

but you're right, most of the time I'd rather be blasting spells than tucked up in a book!!
