First, thanks for this site people - a truly excellent source of info and advice.

Second, having completed BG1, I have just started SoA some 2 days ago but I am confused by the fact that, although Imoen is now dual-classed as a mage, she seems unable to use any of her spells. She has memorized a whole bunch in the journey through the first dungeon but, even after a rest, every single spell she has remains 'browned out' on the main interface - is this normal or is my SoA installation corrupt? Her special ability to set snares does work.

Third, I really don't like the new portraits for Imoen and Jaheira but but Helm knows where they spring from and I haven't a clue as to how I can change them to the bitmaps from BG1. The SoA bitmaps in the saved games don't appear to be in any of the SoA (sub-)directories/installed files. Any help would be much appreciated. I've put small and large BG1 bitmaps in the "portraits" sub-directory but then what? Is it possible to change the portraits once the game has commenced and, if so, how? Apologies to those for whom this is probably the n millionth time requested ...

And last, (phew!) has anyone produced a table which shows the expected level-up hit points for single and/or multiclass characters in relation to their constitution? It would be handy to know what might be a reasonable level up when rolling that die (do I accept that extra 5 HP first roll or could I get up to, say, 12 HP more if I rolled again ...?) For info, the difficulty setting is on "Core Rules" and the ToB expansion is installed.

1) If you rest, her spells should be available. Try clicking on the 'spellcasting' at the bottom of the screen when you have Imoen selected. If that doesn't work, make sure you patch and Baldurdash your game.

2) Try copying them into your save file and rename them for the particular character. (make sure you back up your save game directory first).

3) Multiclass HP is SUPPOSED to work like this, although I don't think it does. This example is for a multiclassed character with 2 classes. If you were multiclassed with 3 classes, the '2's would be replaced with '3's.

Level1: (Class1hproll + highest Con bonus) / 2 + (Class2hproll + highest Con bonus) / 2.

Every level thereafter: (Classhproll + highest Con bonus) / 2.

1) Regarding that you said they were "browned out", it may be because she is wearing armor. Mages of any sort have their spells shown, but aren't able to be cast unless they are wearing nothing or robes.

2) If you put them in the portrait folder, you have to use Custom Portrait in order to add it to a newly created party member. For an NPCC like Imoen, you might want to use a program like Shadow Keeper to go in, and change her portrait.

3) The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is in the back of the manual, where there is a list of single-classes and how much HP they gain, as well as the constitution bonus. It should be noted, however, that very quickly in SoA, your characters will only begin to receive 1, 2, or 3 HP max. This is for game balance and not a bug, so don't worry.

4) WELCOME TO IRONWORKS!!!

In regards to #3, the stoppage of increasing HD is actually in the AD&D rules.

If you want the max ammount of hp your characters can gain, move the difficulty slider to the easiest setting right before you level up. Then when you level up they will gain the max hps avaliable to them.

My thanks to Riftmaker, Brainless One and Jorsh for the replies. Who was wearing armour then? Duh! Got so used to Imoen using Shadow Armour in BG1 I'd forgotten about the restriction on spellcasting. Problem solved. I only wish she still had the 120% stealth that she gained in BG1

I've now come across a table which calculates the maximum HP available on level-up for single class characters in BG1, but whether it applies to BG2 I don't know. I guess if the same D&D rules are used then yes. I'm surprised such a table isn't in the SoA manual. Re-rolling can be important if you get a low HP addition. Mind you, if I was a purist then I should stick with the first roll anyway.
