I'm sure this has been posted before, but if I wanted to play Drizzt in BG, what kind of character would he be and how would you arrange his stat points?

According to ShadowKeeper, his stats are as follows:
STR 13
DEX 20
CON 15
INT 17
WIS 17
CHA 14

It varies on his class, but it's agreed that he's a ranger.

But good luck rolling that high of a character. You'd have to take him through BG, using all the tomes... and you need the tomes anyway to get a Dex of 20 without cheating.

Or simply use those points as a reference to how you should distribute your own points.

There are some mods of him.
Few that say Drizzt is the head-person himself or that he is a NPC who can join your team. The greatest problem with Drizzt is that his person doesnt allow him to wieled a weapon in his shield-slot( If you use his figure in the game ) .The NPC version is therefor perfect because it solves that problem...link to it:

Actually an elf can start with dexterity 19, sooooooooo add in the Tome of Dexterity from BG 1 and...

AND... its only a roll of 96. You could roll that natively in about 20 mins

if you assume you've picked up all the ToTSC tomes then its only 88 - easy-peasy

i reckon the closest class is probably stalker kit ranger because he is a ranger

high-level thief (with UAI) dualled to kensai would be pretty close too i reckon though and a better fit with the weapons master thing - eventually anyway

Well, he is considered a ranger because he studied with the ranger Montolio, but he has all kinds of nifty non-ranger tricks up his sleeve.

i haven't read all of the books (just the icewind dale trilogy and one of the underdark ones) - but it seemed to me that many of the magical abilities were innate rather than learned - could these be added with shadowkeeper instead of the bhall powers maybe?

Well, he learned them alright. The levitation, and the globe of darkness thing he uses all the time are things he LEARNED while in Drow Academy. He's just a gifted student, and that's what makes him so powerful.

Levitate, Globe of Darkness and Faerie Fire were all innate abilities of drow PC's in PnP. The drow elves originally appeared in the Fiend Folio and were designed to be adversaries against the party - hence the addition of innate abilites to make them a little tougher. They were not orginally designed to be PC's and most DM's I played under wouldn't allow them because their drow abilities made them a bit too powerful. Also - until R.A. Salvatore introduced us to a certain drow ranger - drow elves were considered to be universally evil by most gamers.

Having Drizzt "learn" the Globe of Darkness and Levitation at the Drow Academy was just Salvatore's way of rationalizing these innate abilities. (BTW, Drizzt also had the Faerie Fire as an innate ability. He used it in some of the battles in the IWD Trilogy).

On a completely different note, Faerie Fire was one of the most useful spells in PnP (especially at lower levels), and I'm sad to see it wasn't converted into BGII. When cast, it would cause 1-4 figures to be "wreathed" in purplish flames. The flames did no actual damage, but they made opponents much easier to see and hit (effectively raising their AC by 2 points). It would also work on Invisible opponents, so that was a BIG advantage. IF I ever learn how to create spells for the game, that might be one I try to work up.

Cerek, G3's Cleric Remix mod adds Fairie Fire to the game, among many other good things
