In BG2 the player faced a limit of 5 summonings maximum, meaning to say that one could only summon a total of 5 animals/monsters at any one time. This would be cumulative, so if you exited an area before the remaining monsters were unsummoned, these remaining monsters would be counted against your limit (they would not be unsummoned when you left the area).

So for example you summoned 5 bears. After the fight three were left unsummoned, and you exited the area. These 3 would remain summoned, and the next time you tried to summon monsters you could only summon two. You would have to return to the previous area and wait for the 3 bears to be unsummoned.

This, of course, was a real pain.

Does anyone know if BG1 has this limitation?

And this is probably the reason why they made the change in BG2
