I have recently installed BG2 back on to my new hard drive (replacing another hard drive (not the one that windows is installed on)). The old hard drive was partitioned but the new one isn't. When i came to install bg2 first i had to unistall, this was unusual as bg2 was on the hard drive that has now been removed (i couldn't uninstall from the old hard drive as it had died). Never the less it unistalled and i then re-intalled without a problem. However, i then tried to install tob only to find that it needed unistalling also. Upon trying to uninstall tob i recieved an error message saying that it couldn't access a file that was located in an old hard drive (now removed), the drive (E) is now my cd re-writer. Access was denied less than 1% into the uninstall process. The file in question was: BGII\data\25SpelAn.bif. This file doesn't appear to be part of the original bg2 game. It can have come from the following programmes (i hope) tob, official tob patch, dungeon be gone mod or expanded thief stronghold mod. I know this as i found the folder on another pc with the preceding items installed on it.

As things stand, i can play SoA on one pc and soa & tob on another, so if i cannot resolve the problem then i a will just install to soa patch on my pc. However, i would like to be able to play tob on my pc as well and was wondering if there is a solution. Does anyone know exactly where the file came from? I realise the problem is my fault and am not blaming others in the process. Any help is as always most welcome!

The problem is you have registry entries on the "master" HD. These entries tell the CP that SoA/ToB are already installed. You have to clear those entries so that the CP will think the installation is fresh. Doing this requires some slightly advanced CP skills. DO NOT MESS WITH THE REGISTRY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING !!!!
Doing so may cause you to have to completely reformat the master drive.

What you need to do is Uninstall BG2 using Add/Remove programs. Then delete your BG2 folder from your hard drive.

Then go to START> RUN and type in regedit. Do a search for BIOWARE or Baldur and delte any entries. Reboot your computer and reinstall BG2 then TOB then patches then any mods.

Hopefully this should help.

Ironbar, here is a link to a free registry cleaner that is very newbie friendly,
http://www.webmasterfree.com/regcleaner.html
Now, T-D-C is correct, but regedit is NOT friendly to folks that have never done this, IMO.

Also, i will be downloading it onto a different pc than the one i have problems with. Is this a problem? If not i will write it to a cd. Does it interfere with win98?

Start -> Run -> Type regedit [enter]. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version\Run\App Paths\BG2Main.exe .
Select the key BG25_INSTALL in the right pane. Hit delete . Exit. Do not go exploring. Try the install again.

(sigh) Ironbar, I wouldn't have recommended it "sight unseen/unused". Quote: Gandalf to Bilbo, in FotR..."I am not trying to rob you, I'm trying to help you".

Worry not, I have been able to uninstall after all! I placed the tob cd in drive 'e' and was faced with an error screen, when I tried to uninstall I got an error message but this time I had the option to ignore so I did... to cut a long story short, I did a lot of clicking but I was able to uninstall tob and iwd (1&2) and then install problem free. Why I didn't try that before I will never know but at least the problem is now solved. Acknowledges own brilliance!
