Depends on what you like.

Try BG1.

I was considering that but, I expect I would have trouble finding it. But one thing that annoyed me about BG2 was the fact that a lot of people in the game were in the first game and I had no idea who they were. So that might make it worth playing.

BG1 is definitely worth it and you can still buy it online. You're in England? Amazon.co.uk carries it.

Of course the game preceded BG2 so expect lesser graphics and gameplay options, but as you say it's great for getting to know many of the BG2 characters and getting more background info that enhances the storyline of BG2.

You could try icewind dale. It looks very similar to bg2 but you create your entire 6 person party. They look so similar that you would think they were made by the same people.

Well, it was brought out by the same company.
Anyway, it depends on what he liked about BG2 - if it's the roleplaying, engrossing plotline or character banter, Icewind Dale will sorely disappoint.
Planescape: Torment on the other hand has even better roleplaying than the BG series.
Icewind Dale is cool if you liked the looks, combat system and D&D rules of the Baldur's Gate games.

NWN sucks IMHO compared to BG when it comes to story and role playing. NWN is about on line gaming.

IWD is good tough I don`t like it. Too much killing for my taste.

Try Planscape:Torment. One of the best (if not the best) RPG there is.

This being my first post and all (how come people always write that)...

I definitely recommend BG1/TotSC. I have several characters through that combo and are currently trying them out in BG2.
Note that while it is the same Infinity Engine there are some noteworthy differences.
1) Time is not stopped in inventory mode. It took me some time to get used to BG2 as I issued orders and managed inventory while they were being carried out in BG1.
2) If you solo, you don't loose the game if your protagonist is charmed. Moreover charms take forever to run out in BG1.
3) You don't get any XP for scribing scrolls and using thief abilities. (How come there's no XP for pickpocketing in BG2 BTW?).
4) Quicksaving is discouraged by monster generation. New monsters will be generated on top of the ones already present every time you load.
There are other differences as well of course, but these could give you some initial problems.

With TotSC you get two independent quests on top of the main one to complete and you can start one and let another one rest if you like. I liked Durlags Tower a lot although it will give you some nuts equipment compared to the rest of the game.

You also "explore" in BG1 making it more adventurous. You go to the border of a map section and see what lies over the top of the hill so to speak. I find BG1 less linear and less static for that reason alone. I don't really feel like and adventurer in BG2. More like hired help.

Besides all that Imoen is actually likeable and valuable in BG1. Don't know why they ruined her. I really don't. (This is a matter of opinion I guess).

maybe they're fishing for a . . .

welcome to Ironworks!

all good points but I feel its worth mentioning to NickZilla that there's a mod called TuTu that allows you to play the BG1 story & content through the BG2 engine - i like it

Interesting MOD thing. Is it with BG2 spells as well? It would surely make a lot of encounters easier - if the scrolls are present somehow of course. I also remembered two other things that drove me insane in BG1
5) Your own magical resistence prevents friendly spells as well. Talk about annoying!
Branwen - Cure Serious Wounds
Minsc - Magical Resistence
Doomguard: 18 + 3 = 21 hit
Minsc 19hp damage
Minsc death
6) Ring of Freedom is incompatible with Boots of Speed. At least in some parts of the game. Took me forever to pinpoint.
Alas that is details for the late game and sidelining the original question.
If you don't mind VGA graphics the oldie Darksun is actually a quite good game with a different engine.
