no worries from my point of view - i liked the pictures

keep playing like you're playing i reckon - like you say, mages can be significant in SoA and in this situation one of the various protection removing spells could have been your baby but i've never really got round to learning the spells yet

I think the encounter as described is the one with the mage Rayric Gethris, no? The cowled wizard that Edwin sends you to conquer.
Nice job on defeating him, as early in the game he can be quite tedious until you find the right tactics.

A very simple method involves one oil of speed for your best fighter to initiate dialogue, then to flee back down the stairs to wait for the contingency defense spells to wear off. Its a tad silly, but hey it works. It takes some time for them to wear off, but when they do, he'll only have a protection from normal missiles spell on and so will be easy meat for your fighters.

I don't think tactics from the previous games are that disimilar to be honest, despite the heavier usage of magic and counter spell upon counter spell in SoA. I've come fresh from the first game into this and many similar tactics that I used in it are working just as well in SoA. Its just all relative to the power of your party and exploring all available options to find the most effective tactics.
Thus, Know thy enemy is a handy maxim.

Ahmen to that Armen. I've shied away from examining them in the same way we know and love BG's spells. Although most are (functionally) similar, it still felt like there was enough difference to require some in-depth look at the new magical arsenal.

Oh well, back to the books then I suppose. That battle could, and perhaps should, have gone a lot easier then it did. Despite the comedy value of it all, I don't imagine such a tactic will prove useful too often, or serve me well in the long run.

Actually, the naked fist is a good tactic to keep in mind. Even though you can't finish the mage off with it, you can keep them disrupted and nearly unable to cast spells with your fists. The lesson to learn, though, is to have your fighters each always carry around at least one non-enchanted weapon to use in similar situations so you can actually kill the mage before the Protection from Magical Weapons spell expires.

Well, as he is a Berserker (which, IMHO, is rather similar to a BARBARIAN) it seems quite fitting. Welcome to Amn, Lord Brass! Good luck in your travels.
