So here I am.

A mere two-plus years since purchasing BG2, but I've finally made the migration from it's illustrious predecessor...and boy, has it got the measure of me already!

Not since playing with the doggies on Baldur's ship has my party had their posteriors handed to them so often, and so unceremoniously. Damnable mages and priests! They've ruined my favourite anti-spell tactic of massed missile fire. All that seems to do these days is activate their contingencies of Protection from Magic Weapons/Protection from Normal Missiles.

However, having said that, I did manage to get past one loathsome spell-wielding opponent in spectacular fashion. I had been tasked to: (SPOILER)

Get rid of some Cowled Wizard in the Docks district, the name of which I can't remember. Seems he's annoyed Mae Var (sp?) in some way.

On effecting entry to the fellow's house, I found him upstairs past some annoying (very annoying) golems. Heal up, and re-equip then onwards, towards our goal.

I find this chap lurking about as wizards do, so I open up with a quick fusillade - as you never know your luck - but the contingencies kick in, and the spells start flying. Most of my party ends up running around in fear, whilst my berserker is standing there looking at his hard-earned magical sword, thinking "What the hell am I supposed to do now?"

In the end, I resorted to the most basic and crudest of tactics. Realising that my group wouldn't last long at this rate, my berserker bunches his fist and...BAM! Smacks the wizardly blaggard right around the head.

So what was the Cowled villains response? He blew up, 'cause I hit him so hard with naught but my bare hand. Who needs a magic weapon when you're a pugilist.

Thanks for that Armen.

Quite the culture shock for us BG1ers. There's a significant difference in the style of play as well as the approach to the game. You could get through without a mage previously, but I'm sure it will make a good deal of difference here in Amn.

Of course I'm not entirely sure who to take into the party either. The new chaps might all have their individual merits, but it's a bit too much to think about so soon into the start. You can't really tell the strengths of weaknesses of a class until you play it; paper facts may not do them justice after all.

Oh well, on to the next misadventure - and the next butt kicking. If only we were administering the butt kickings. I think Minsc would be happier that way...

Edit: Unless you thought I meant he literally blew up. No, I just gibbed him.

ah - i thought you meant the 'chunky death' you get when you take something to -10HP or lower - i didn't think you could actually kill anything with your fists unless you're a monk (or a monster type)

what did you do - keep smacking him about unitl his PFMW ran out? that's pretty cool too

You are right on this. The Cowled Wizard probably died through an unnoticed attack from something else.

Doh! Lost my reply.

I believe Minsc and the mighty Boo dealt the final blow. The Horror spell had finished right near the end of the encounter. Until then, my berserker kept the fellow off balance be repeated pummellings with his fist - which I really didn't think would work at all.

I had meant to say, that having gone back and had a look at the save game, it appears Minsc had a normal mace on him at the time, but it was of little use, as he was too busy running around like a headless chicken. Even the indomitable powers of Boo couldn't stop the spell from taking effect.

Edit: Sorry for the confusion guys.
