Can you actually use the rod on dead people not in your party? Wow I didn't know that! Not that there's a lot of dead non-party members I want to revive though

The best way to do it is to use the rod one or two seconds on the person before they die.

I WILL NOT ONLY KILL YOU, BUT I'LL RAISE YOU FROM THE DEAD TO KILL YOU EVEN SLOWER AND MORE PAINFULLY!"

Actually, why waste all of those charges? Just heal him with a cleric

I think the reason the Rod works is because it's an instant thing, no? I'm unsure, I've never done it, but you need to hit the target while the red circle (or blue circle, for that matter) is still there and the damage meter reads "Dead"... A caster would take too long, I believe. Unless it's a cleric/mage with the Robe of Vecna and Amulet of Power.. Then, maybe. But I don't know, I could be wrong.

The rod takes 5 seconds I think. Usually those npcs I raise only ressurect right after they died.

A bit of thread Necromancy here to add something not already stated in the thread (what a change!). I have saved Xzar, by talking to Lucette before she murders him. Very interesting as she reacts as though she has killed him. And Xzar just stands there like an idiot, "What in the...?? You're not Montaron!" Just an interesting tid-bit that I enjoyed. I believe The Darkest Day mod gives you that opportunity; you could even let him join your party IIRC.
Almost. TDD doesn't change that sequence at all. It plays throguh as normal, Xzar dies. THEN, another Xzar dimension doors in, says "that was a clone", and you go to find Montaron. Yes, again.
