bascially i have come to the point where i met this nice npc called coran.

my party already consists of 6 people. so now i am thinking wether to leave him standing there or kick another member out.

my thoughts would be
-khalid
-kivan
-coran

one of these three has to go. i just wonder which one would be the weakest link. considering my party consists of bowmen only. all of them are lvl 5
-khalid: 65hp 15 str 18 dex 17 con bow ++ [fighter]
-kivan: 37hp 18/12 str 17 dex 14 con bow ++ [ranger]
-coran: 39 14 str 20 dex 12 con bow +++ [fighter/thief]

which one would you kick out?

Without a doubt or second thought---lose Coran! Khalid is a yellow-belly but pretty decent fighter if you can take his "my heart's really not in this" without throttling him and Kivan is an *excellant* ranger even if a little quiet. I have never found much use for Coran, though. Even with his triple prof. in bows, his constitution is reflective of his intelligence--too low for anything but irritation factor.

Geez, can you tell I really don't like Coran?

That depends on who else you have in your party - and what you are playing yourself.

My suggestion (based on the info given) is to get rid of Kivan. I always thought he was horribly weak to be a ranger. PLUS, there is another sub-quest you can pursue if you add Coran.

Just my opinion.

Oh Cerek, I can't believe you don't like Kivan . Given time and patience, he's a very good ranger and I've never been sorry to have him (I actively seek him out). Xan was a waste of mage breath, IMO. And Jaheira? Give her a sex-change If you have Immy, you really don't need Coran for thieving unless you dualled her. (I thought Coran hit with crossbows, anyhow. IMO not as efficient as a long or composite +1). I guess it boils down to how you're playing your game--fighter strong or magic strong.

xan is a pretty decent mage. i use him for the sleep, horror and the like. dunno if there are better mages out there. my thought would be getting quayle or something but hes not within reach at the moment.

as for the thieving indeed coran is not needed for that. though his 80% locpick is nice. i am mainly fascinate by his great dex and archery skill. his speech is fun too.

(For sheer laughs, keep Kivan and get Quayle. Quayle has the charisma of a dead carrion crawler, but when he starts calling Kivan a 'lobotomized gibberling' I nearly fall out of my chair laughing! The interaction between some of these guys is absolutely amazing. And if you have Xan and Edwin the evil mage---fireworks! It's almost worth playing a game just for the 'conversations'!)

Unless I missed it, you didn't mention what class you are.

I'd turf Khalid because I've never been impressed with his
fighting skills, because the stammering annoys me a little bit,
and (mostly) because I'm a tank-like engine of destruction paladin.

I'm about two hours from the end of the game, and do my
fighting with Rikter the paladin and Branwen, and I have
Kivan, Coran and Imoen as my archery line. The amount of
damage they can hand out with magic arrows is absolutely BRUTAL.
(Coran's THACO is down to 3, I think.)

I'm not really thrilled with Kivan's performance, but I like him
for a lot of personality-related reasons, so he stays.

If you're a soft-skinned character and can't afford to give up
a front-line fighter, I think you could pass on Coran, since
Kivan is nearly as good, especially if you give him the bracers
of marksmanship (?) and the nice magic bow that pops up at some point.

Cheers,
Rikter

Unless you use a trick you cannot separate certain NPC pairs, and Khalid and Jaheira is one of those. They work as a team. The trick that I mentioned is to place the member of the pair that you want to drop in a building that you'll never have to set foot in again and then remove that NPC from the party. From a roleplaying vantage this doesn't wash because there is no way that Khalid and Jaheira would ever split up. But it's your game, play it however you most enjoy.

I really liked using the team of Kivan and Coran as stealthy archers. If you drop Khalid and Jaheira in order to add Coran you could pick up Faldorn for your healer right there in Cloakwood. That is what I would do.

I'd lost Khalid...

Coran is the best archer on the game, and Kivan IMPO is the best NPC on the game!
