Anybody here playing DDO?
I've read about it, briefed over the quick start, and am considering making the download plunge. Tips or advice?

You mean Dungeon and Dragons Online, right? In that game you need to form a group to be really effective. There are some things a solo character can do, but you don't go far or fast. It's a good game if you have set of RL peeps that agree to meet at set times so your party can adventure. If you DON'T have a preset group, then you have to hang out in the common area and try to pick up fellow travelers. That's a situation I don't like because you come into contact with all sorts of jerks and creepzoids that actually expect you to play to WIN! Whatta bunch of weirdos! But seriously, if you are new to, or just not very good at(meaning fast), online games...then you WILL probably make a mistake of commission or omission that will get your party wiped. When that happens your more experienced party members will literally get pissed at you, and let you know it. Try it and see if you like it.
A bit of advice for ANY online game; Try to have the entire rig you are using be "on the wire". NO WIRELESS components. Wireless, especially if you are close to the limit of the range, has a noticeable lag. That lag will be VERY APPARENT in an online game. Happy adventuring!

Yes do a search on the forums and you'll find multiple threads on it, usually with me bitching about the fact that it was not worth the monthly payments. Now however, it is free, so much of it is nullified. I reinstalled it recently but haven't gotten back to playing just yet.

I tried it a few years ago, didnt think too much of it though I did not play it a great deal.I like to do some things solo and as has been said its really not the game for that.A couple other options I found better-Lord of the Rings is ok, has some good elements but I really hated the caster classes(and I like casters).Lots of stuff to do solo or in group. It was fairly low on assholes which is good. That may have changed, its been awhile. Ended up going back to WoW, which admittedly has a lot of jerkoffs. Though if you get in a guild with actual grown-ups its still fun. Still playing it-For the Horde!

I actually think Felix that you would really like WoW. But, it is not free. $15 a month, worth it easily, since I have been playing this one game on and off for around 5 years. If you insist on free then DDO is not a bad way to go, but isn't really D&D in the sense we are used to.

Well Felix, DDO is a fantasy wargaming adventure. You won't be fighting Nazis/Fascists/Communists/AlQuada,, you'll be fighting Zhentarim/Twisted Rune/dragons/beholders. You'll be using swords and sorcery, not bullets and bazookas. There are conventional warfare MMO's out there(I think), so you might like one of those. But if you mess up and get your party wiped in those games, your party members get REALLY pissed and will just not venture with you anymore until you are fast/twitchy enough.

The easy way to ease into an MMO, if you've never played one, is to play a dps (damage per second) class. For me, it's usually easier to figure out both the game in general and how the classes work if I play something I'm familiar with, either an Archer type dps, or a rogue. Learn your skills doing the solo stuff, including threat reduction skills if any, or at least learn how they work. It's an MMO, so some multiplayer will be required, that's the way it should be. If you take the time to learn your role in a party, and then try to fulfill that role as best you can, you should be fine. There are still going to be those that if you're not perfect, they'll fuss. My tactic for those is to ignore them, and then blacklist them. Keep a pad and paper beside you for writing down names of people that rub you the wrong way, and if you get into a group with one of them, politely excuse yourself from the party.
