Arcane Warrior

I'm level 14 mage and still haven't specialized. I was hoping Wynne could teach me spirit, but have decided it's rather not what I'm interested in. I see the shapeshifter as pretty useless. I hear blood mage is not so good.

So, I guess I'm looking to go arcane warrior. Where can I learn that? Is it any good?

Since nobody has replied: Arcane Warrior seems to be one of the best specs for mage. It gives you awesome melee staying power. I'd go Arcane Warrior/Healer to be an awesome tank.

You can get the spec from a side quest in the Ruins in the Brecilian forest. There's a stone altar and a phylactery right next to each other.

Strange.

I have tried Mage and got Arcane Warrior by default at level 14. Please don't ask how that happened as I have no idea.

Whatever, I never really used it. By that time I had plenty of melee back up and kept on going as a Mage firing off spells.

My question is whether the Arcane Warrior is better than a straightforward Warrior as a tank?

Well, according to the site, yeah. There are vids on youtube, sorry, no links, of AW's soloing both the High Dragon, and the Archdemon, naked on the Archdemon...

Every spellcaster should pick this for the magic/strength swap itself. Almost too powerful for a tier one ability imo.

Agreed.

I still can't get comfortable with playing rogue so I'm probably missing something there.

I'm now trying Arcane Warrior and it does seem to me that once at level 7 and through the Circle Mage quest the build is absurdly powerful.

I don't know whether the game balance is right on this one but, so far, Arcane Warrior does look like a good choice for a solo charge.
