My warrior started out with 17 HP and 18 constitution on level one. In the manual it says that a di is rolled to determine how much more HP I receive. The di for the warrior has ten sides. Therefore I could gain 1-10 HP (this is found on page 139). Also, looking at page 134 about special bonuses from having high constitution I should receive an EXTRA 4 HP each level. Lastly the number of dice increase as I go from level to level. Level 2 to 3 uses 2 dice and level 4 to 5 uses 4 dice. At least thats what I think they are saying.

Ok, while gaining levels my fighter gained these many hit points:

Level 1-2: Bonus of 15 HP
Level 2-3: Bonus of 15 HP
Level 3-4: Bonus of 12 HP
Level 4-5: Bonus of 11 HP
Level 5-6: Bonus of 13 HP
Level 6-7: Bonus of 9 HP

By the way that this shows, it almost looks like I get less and less HP per level. But the manual says that the number of dice to determine HP gaining should INCREASE in number each level making one think that that would also increase thier rate of gain of HP.

A great amount of increase that the manual says is supposed to occur between level 6 and 7 would be a bonus of 54 HP. A perfectly average bonus would be 37 HP. But no, I got a bonus of 9 HP! Even if each di rolled 1 plus the CON bonus that would result in 10 HP so the amount I received shouldn't even be possible!

Please, anything anyone can do to help me understand this a little better would be very much appreciated. What actually goes on behind the screen when determining your HP bonus each level?

I think you get ONE ADDITIONAL die of HP each level. So to get from level 4 to level 5 you get your old level 4 HP plus the die roll plus the 4 point bonus. I don't know how you ever got a 15 point gain! That is more than the max die roll plus your 4 point bonus. I have had Kalid get only 2 more points and my mage only one point going up a level

Ok, I as well have figured it out, though those 15 point gains confuse me a little as well. I probably just didn't read it right.

Oh well, here is all the info I wanted.

For level 1 to 2, you roll a single di (with the number of sides on it determining on your class) and add or subtract the constitutional bonus. The di STAYS on the table along with your constitutional bonus. When you go to level 3, you roll a new and seperate di, NOT the original di from the first roll, then when the di is rolled you add another constitutional bonus and so on...

I really think the manual should of stated this more clearly. Oh well. Thanks for you help Sherpa Doug, even if it was a little late.

I saw this post days ago but wasn't able to reply at that time. For what its worth, you don't have to accept the first amt of hit points you get. Here's what I was taught by my personal guru:
First ,when anyone levels up,save the game and title it with whoever is 'leveling' up.reload and level up.if you don't get the max hit pts reload again. If you get close I recommend you save again and title it with amt of hit pts you got.Reload back to the leveling save and start trying again to get max pts.Once you get the max pts save and label it so&so has however many pts.It has worked like a charm for me,although it can take several tries to get max pts.Hope this has made sense!

I tried that a couple of time and always got the exact same hit point increase each time. So I stopped trying. Maybe I will try again next level-up.
