I just found that (the devils one) while looking for old pictures of Glasya
![]() I think in general 1e had the best designs, but 3e colored everything very nicely (albeit a bit Photoshoppy). 2e was a bit iffy, but they did tend to be based on 1e designs (good); 3e tends to change things completely, for better or for worse (often worse?). I don't like the new comic/cyberpunk? look...

Here are some pics of Glasya and her papa, Asmodeus, for those of you who are not familiar with what we're talking about.

Yeah, the 1e picture of Glasya is great - attractive (as she should be) and still devil-like. The 1e picture of Asmodeus is okay - I like the design, but the drawing itself could be better. The 2e pictures of both are, er, just kind of ugly... Both of them are supposed to be very good-looking! I can see a strong (American) comic book influence, though.

Yeah, I think the whole remake of the Dungeons and dragons system to be a shame. I'm firmly rooted in the First/Second edition, altho I did tend to jump around between them a bit. I did use the optional rules in 2nd ED and I used optional rules (combat tactics and skills:powers) for special maneuvers somewhat similar to the 3rd ED "feats", But its not the same. The artwork has went crappy, as well. I mean, there were amazing artists like (I think I remember the name right...) Larry Elmore?

Yeah! Larry Elmore is my favorite fantasy artist - he is the best! (He has a web site now, by the way.)
It's a shame that the art went a very different direction from before (it's nice, but it's very different). The rules of course fell off a high cliff, too - everything has a very "console game" feeling to me now (changing classes whenever you feel like it, "prestige classes," feats, etc.). I also don't like a lot of the new wording (darkvision, etc.) - Gygax chose them better. ![]()

Here's my take on it -
When Gygax started this game, it was just like when Garfield started Magic. The games were intellectually stimulating with a good sense of humor. The art wasn't the greatest at times, but it was endearing. Then, their ideas caught on, eventually their companies were bought up by corporations who were only looking at the bottom line, which means setting your standards a lot lower in the intellect department and going for the bling to draw the eye... Is it any wonder that Gygax has had nothing to do with AD&D for years? With that being said, I was just checking out the forums at Wizards.com as they are preparing for the roll-out of AD&D 4th edition. |

Well - Mr. Gygax got cut out for more complex reasons (stocks and such) - very weird and sad that things like that can happen (now he doesn't even have the rights to much of his own stuff).
But... 4th Edition?! What the... How is it going to be different? There is 3e and 3.5e... Is 4e going to be a "3e-like" as 3.5e was?

Can't have a repeatable income without a disposable product, now can we (windows OS every 2-3 years, cars that don;t last more than 3-4 years, computers that are out-of-the-box out-of-date, ect)
Its a sad that quantity destroys quality in products we once liked SilentThief
