You don't need any strength to pick locks, but I think you need something like 18+ strength to bash in locks, but I'm not sure.

bashing chests to open:It checks your strength alone, regardless of what you are wielding. You can bash some of them open, but the amount of strength you need depends on how tought the chest is. Chances are, if you failed picklock it is a tough chest as well. So you either need a better thief or a tougher ranger. At 18/60 strength your bash is about 30%, minus the modifiers the chest applies. There are things you simply cannot break, as well. They are designed to keep you out, after all. A chest isn't much use if anybody can kick it open no matter how good the lock...Just to clarify, are these chests that you could bash open before you tried to pick them? The more difficult ones to pick are also more difficult to bash. If you couldn't bash them before or after you may just not be strong enough. Of course, if you could bash them before and can't after then that's really weird.

well.....my barbarian who ended up with 24 strength didn't tend to have lock difficulties but it can be annoying that a fighter with 18 or so strength can't bash in a old locked chest....silly game

Let's just say that with Crom Faeyr you don't have any difficulty bashing locks.

And you couod open it with MM you know, just like in NWN.
Actually, in true PnP D&D, the Magic Missile spell only works against living targets. It would not work against inanimate objects (i.e. a lock on a chest).

Bioware realised this when they coded the Baldurs Gate series because they are amazingly wise and great. The Neverwinter Night's coders are a bunch of monkeys in comparison, and they failed to realise this fundemental point about the MM spell. They should be lined up and shot.

Long live the BG 2 development team!

The thing about having a minimum strength seems to make sense, except that I will magically boost my monk and then call upon holy might, so he has ST 21 and still can bash open only 5% of locks...yeah, I suspect that there are modifiers involved as well, but it seems that with an unhuman (ie strength of a giant) strength, I should be able to kick in most doors...just as an alternative!
I can usually use my theif, but I was just curious if I'm missing something.

Well they must expect slightly unbalanced adventures to drop by. Why else would so many chests and bedside table be booby trapped with lightning bolt spells?
