After getting a new soundcard my problem here got solved, but now I have a new problem.
The mic on my mobo sound card isn't working properly. It is very quiet for the first 4 or so seconds after which it seems to die completely. If I switch on the "+20dB mic boost" it becomes a little louder and very distorted (impossible to hear). I have tried maxing up the mic volume through sound control panel and all that. No help. Tried reinstalling drivers. Didn't help either. I was using it and worked fine just 2 days before I got the new soundcard. I can connect it to my Creative SB soundcard, and it works perfectly then. Problem is, I have to connect it at the back. If I want to connect through the frontpanel, which is more convenient, I have to connect through the mobo sound card. It's an Asus M2N mobo. and it uses SounMax. Any advice is appreciated. [ 10-31-2006, 01:43 PM: Message edited by: ZFR ]

Your problem could be many things but some things to try if you haven't already.
Make sure you disabled/enabled onboard sound toally, when in and out of use, as in via the bios. Looked at the control panel sound options (not the volume control) and check all the accelerations, playback etc. The 20db mic boost usually sorts low sound for me. As far as distortions go you could check the onboard card to see if something isn't 'hitting' it.

You may not be able to run the mobo audio capabilities as long as the 3rd party sound card is installed. Some mobos will allow it and some won't. Yes, you may have to go into the BIOS and enable it. Also, it is possible the sound card software may allow 'legacy' devices.
But it's probably easier and cheaper to just get a mic extension.

I checked some online shops here and can't seem to find such mic extension cables anywhere...

Yeah, I know on my motherboard, the onboard sound isn't available with my X-Fi plugged in. This isn't a problem, as I have the front panel that came with it anyway.
It might be worth doing some research though. I found something on the FrontX web page that suggests you could, but it seems only for the mic, and most front audio ports come with the mic and headphones on the same plug. If yours has each wire on a separate connector, you might be able to do it...
