in case anyone has been wondering, my computer is currently dead.
hard drive MAY be salvageable, but it is uncertain.
looking to replace my motherboard as I feel that might be the problem.
didn't have anything backed up, so I am hoping that the hard drive is not at fault.
yay me.
you may see me again by the end of next week.

Good luck, I still have the one module, or maybe two that you sent me, should you need them.

FUN! CPU and ram are fine. Tested them for 12 hrs.
what happened with me is similar, except I am not as smart or as prepared as Ziroc was. took me a full day to figure out it was my bad IDE cable keeping me from doing my backing up. looks like the drive (my main one) is slowly on it's way out, so I'll have to buy a new one within the next month or two. as well, using my sister's machine (which I built) has shown me the error of my ways:

i) always have spare DVD-RW drives on hand
ii) always have spare blank DVD-Rs on hand
iii) never be without music or you WILL drive yourself insane
iv) never be too proud or too stubborn to call friends for help
v) always, ALWAYS regularly back up your stuff
vi) make sure all your computers have a floppy drive, even if the technology is certified archaic
vii) make sure to have cash available somewhere if you need to buy parts at a moment's notice
viii) never spend yourself completely out of cash and have to rely on credit cards in order to survive - that never helps
ix) never feel too priviledged to have more than one internet browser available to you
x) did I mention to BACK UP ALL YOUR IMPORTANT FILES yet? yes? good.
xi) patience isn't a virtue - it should be able to be bought at the local supermarket
xii) getting drunk and then working on a computer is a BAD THING (please note, I didn't do this.)
xiii) have extra cables available
xiv) don't trust a computer-related product just because it is new
xv) LABEL YOUR BACKUPS PROPERLY (as there were a few files I couldn't find for hours sitting in front of my face)
xvi) if possible, have a spare machine handy (I had JUST given mine away...)
xvii) those cans of compressed air are your friends if used properly
xviii) have a computer toolkit handy, and if you don't have one either buy one or make one up

Friend of mine did this. Geez, 6 hours just to get the DVD-drive working... Funny as hell though..

I think I can do basic hardware installations in my sleep now, except for MB's and maybe processors...

Almost back in action.
Maybe a few more days.
Reformatted the hard drive (so far) a total of five times. Aiming for around three to seven more times before reinstalling everything in the old computer. Wish me luck, as I'll need it.

okay, let's see how it works now.
ten formats via Windows XP
one fdisk
two formats using MS-DOS (which took forever)
does this equal one working computer again?
so far... so good.
pity I lost ALL my NWN portraits. spent ages getting those...
