No, it won't

The AMD processors do get warmer than the Intel processors, but they are designed to be like that. That comparison is like suggesting a tractor isn't as useful as a Ferrari because it can't travel as fast.

As for noise, there are plenty of silent fans and cooling solutions available for both AMD and Intel processors, so it's a bit of a moot point (you could use the money you save by buying an AMD processor to buy a really effective 'silent' fan and still have change left over ).

A noisy chip? Since when do cpu's make noise? Most AMD fans run at a higher pitch then do others, but nothing a water cooler couldn't quell.

I'm aircooled btw, 2 intakes, 2 in the PSU, 1 exhaust, 1 cpu, 1 gpu, and still manage to clock in @ the 38-40 DB range, while keeping cpu temp @ 36*c while doing nothing, and 51*c under full load. Heat is not really an issue with these chips, as they have a higher operating temp then do others. This current Sempron runs normal to 85*c, then will kick in the alert at 90*c, and will shut down @ 104*c. However hot that may be, other chips would burst at that temp.

You could use that extra change for more, or faster, or more and faster memory, and really leave a p4 in the overpriced and overated zone.

Of course there's always the reason the DOD uses Intel chips, for the ultra paranoid. AMD chipsets don't support hardware random number generators, that being said, I prefer AMD.

I'm running an AMD barton 2800+ OCed to 3200+, runs at about 65C max underload, 59C optimal, on a cool day or not underload, down from 90C with my old hsf. My system has no side panel, so it can intake directly from the room although i have 2 intakes, it has 3 exhausts, and various other fans, such as graphics cooling, harddrive fans etc. Making a total of 9 fans, it makes a little noise, but i replaced the cpu fan for a whisper one, so it's better, not quite but better.
But i'm willing to put up with the noise for cheap high performance.

The intel P4 extreme edition catches my eye however, i wouldn't mind a dual processor system with extreme edition chips.

Close it. Opening the side of an ATX case will interfere with the airflow inside. It's better to have it closed, and set up properly, than open.

Yup, and I have to disagree with the comment about AMD running hotter... Not true, just look at the 64-bit processors, my friend has one and he is yet to break45 degrees on full load with a stock standard cooler.

Mmmm, I just got myself a good case and CPU cooler so I am about the same now too

Xeon is that already. and anyway the new xeons will have 3 or 4 meg of cashe so they will be better than the extreme editon processors anyway.

The newer P4 core the "Prescott" runs hotter than the fires of hell itself, and with super low voltage A64's now available (Winchester) they run undeniably cooler!

The P4's are very strong when it comes to video editing, as has been mentioned above, as well as in several other encoding/decoding situations. For gaming however, AMD is currently top dog, and it serving the overclocking community well by providing partially unlocked processors (required for their Cool and Quiet ability).

The ability to lower the multiplier and crank up the HTT+memory frequency is great!

As a gamer, there is no alternative to AMD at present.

It runs cooler open, i don't have a side intake, so it overheats pretty easily with the side panel on, besides, i prefer to have it open.

Your case and fans are extremely inefficient if you can't even close your case, and it is obviously not set up correctly. You should really fix that. Even if you just add another blowhole and stick in a 120mm fan or something.

I heard a story once, involving a spider, and an open case...go figure.
