After reading the Spiderman villain thread in the movie section, I am curious as to who you all think is the greatest villain ever.

I like Magneto. I find him the perfect blend of power and personal story. It was a great ongoing story to see how Magneto developed and how he reacted to the things in his life. The experiences which made him who he was. Over time he also grew in the understanding of his power and how to use it. His power was great enough to give the heroes a good battle but good always won in the end. Even when the good came from Magneto's own concience. I much prefer this type of villian than someone like Galactus. Wiping out planets and galaxies seems a little bit much power for one villian to have.

Well, I like Joker and Lex Luthor because they are normal people.
I like Magneto because he is conflicted and basically just trying to do what he thinks is right. Some of us might fall into the same trap. Doctor Doom, again is a mostly normal guy who relies on his brain. The others I included mainly because they are "classic" villains. But they don't match up to the others.

Magneto was really a better villain when he was still completely evil. You could get into hating him before they added the whole silly "conscience" and the "for the safety of mutants everywhere attitude." His original approach was that mutants were a Hitler-style supreme race.
![]() Dr. Doom is certainly the heaviest hitter on the list above when it comes to pure, sane evil. The Super-Skrull also comes to mind, but that's the one from the 60's, 70's, and (early to mid)80's because I don't know if they "wussed him up" or not lately....lol. From the same time frame there's also the Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Kingpin, Ultron, and who could forget the pure evil that was...Dark Phoenix? Sabretooth actually came on the scene in the late 70's, but he was a two-bit villain prior to his re-vamping in the mid-80's and wouldn't even come close to your list back then. Actually, in those days, he would have qualified for the lamest villain list, but now I'd say he makes it into the really evil club. At least as of the mid 90's, for all I know he's a member of the X-Men now...lol. ![]() [ 11-22-2002, 07:44 PM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

I loved the Super Skrull as well. He was a wicked kickazz baddie, awesome when drawn by John Byrne. Sabretooth did start out as a twobit flunkie in PowerMan & Iron Fist. But i totally agree with you that he may not be a great one.. but for sure one of the better evil ones. Kang was always one of my faves including all his different incarnations, Immortus, Rama-Tut, and im sure their are some others their as well. Ultron rocks as well. What a wicked villan. Mephisto was another great and powerful villian that i loved to hate. |

I voted for Dr. Doom. He is a classic character type, tortured by personal demons he cannot defeat despite his ability to conquer the world around him (even if it is not the entire world). Even when he manages to achieve one of his most important goals--freeing his mother's soul from Mephisto--he can find no comfort in this (read Triumph & Torment, co-starring Dr. Strange).
One of the things that has always made Victor a driven man are his facial scars. Despite the fact that he could easily design a regenerative device to heal his face, seeing his facial scars made him aware of the scars in his soul, something no device could ever fix or undo. Another great villain is Adrian Veidt--Ozymandias from the classic graphic novel The Watchmen. Handsome, wealthy, athletic, intelligent--and the single greatest mass-murderer in human history. He personally kills 3 million people, but in doing so brings a measure of peace and unity to the entire planet, forcing you to ask yourself if what he did was truly evil....
