I had a cousin that always thought the character he was playing was him. That was so damn anoying in Pen and Paper. Something bad would happen to his character, and he'd take it personal.

People who think of the character as an extension of themselves are not roleplayer at all...

It can be creepy, too. There's that guy I "know" who is a big Vampire: The Masquerade fan, and I'm sure he think he is really his character, you should see the way he act in real life, and he is always mumbling too, which make him look even more psycho. I was suposed to join his group once, but when I found out how he acted in real life, I changed my mind. I realy don't want to see how they play.

To get back on topic, in CRPG, 90% of the time I play as a female.

I would rather design an NPC around myself.

I to some extent see myself as the character I´m playing or rather let the character do as I would have done. Still try to fit the behavior into the role of the class.

Actually I´ve never tried to play a female character in BG2 yet, ought to try it once, but the majority of the NPC in my parties are females. Is it just me or are the women generally better characters, or is it just my male opinion?
I have played a female character in Fallout, Arcanum and BG: Dark Alliance though.

Edit: This of course only counts for creating the PC, in games like IWD things are completely different.

I've run both.

Running a female Kensai/Mage now, with the sort of sultry/giggly woman voice.

I've always wanted to run a halfling class with that BELLOWING ANGRY WOMAN voice... "I REQUIRE REST!"

I think it would be pretty funny.

I'm the exact opposite--I can't stand the female characters in BG2. Well, not all of them, there is one I like: Mazzy. It's not because of their gender. It's because of their personality. Let's review:

Jaheira: Not as whiny as BG1, thank goodness, but her voice grates on my nerves.
Aerie: When will she ever stop whining and grow a #@&$ spine?!
Nalia: Naive stuck-up twit. Also tried to roleplay her without success. So double drat her.
Imoen: Pull yourself together, girl! I took a lickin' and kept on tickin', so why can't you?
Viconia: Just what I wanted in a romance, someone who could kick my butt and feel my pain while doing it. And expected me to console her when it was all over.

I'd feel a lot better if there were some whiny men in this game.
Well... there are whinny men like that in the game *hint*anomen*hint*.

Seriously, do you judge people like that in real life, too? If so, you really neeed to change your outlook on life and on other people, or you'll probably end up lonely a long part of your life, or maybe with other people as judgmental as you, which would not make good friends.

Heh, I tend to agree with you.

I find the Aerie romance especially horrible. It is just so rail-roaded. It goes like, comfort-comfort-praise rinse and repeat, and then at some point she just spontaneously develops a character because I have spent such a long time blindly agreeing with her. And this "attitude" manifests itself in her becoming totally fawning. Ok, sometimes she also yells at Viccy and Jaheira, which is sometimes justified, but other times I really wish I had the option to pull her aside and tell her what Viconia and Jaheira have been through of pains. She seriously needs a big shot of grrl-power.

Besides, is it only me who have the habit of always equipping Aerie with warhammers?

One thing that really bugs me with Jaheira (who otherwise have a cool romance because you sometimes can/have to disagree with her) is that she automatically assumes that everyone can appreciate the merits of the "balance" she is speaking about. I really wish I could make her explain what that term meant to her.
