who are your favorite authors?

my altime favorite is Orson Scott Card.
his greatest books are the ones about Ender. i'm sure somebody here know's what i'm talking about.

my second fav. would be anne rice.
i've read most of her work.

i like a lot of others. but those are my favorite to read.

Not familiar with that Slackerboy but I'm glad someone started this topic up again. Got some great reading ideas from the old board.

My (partial) list: JRR Tolkien, TH White, Mary Stewart, Leon Uris, Dean Koontz, about half of Tom Clancy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Shakespeare, histories and historical novels, James Mitchner, EL Doctrow, and many others. I'll think some more and post back (if the exertion doesn't kill me).

I really like Elaine Cunningham and Bob Salvatore as for TSR writers. Outside of the DND mainstream I like Mickey Zucker Reichert, J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen Lawhead, Piers Anthony and Roger Zelazny.

Stephen Laws

I like lots of others, but these are my favorite modern writers at the moment. Yes, most of it is horror!
Personally I find good characterisation one of the most important factors to my enjoyment of a book. Stephen King is particularly good at creating 'real' characters that you can empathise with. I'm glad that in England he is now gaining some respect as a 'serious' writer - he was always viewed as pulp fiction before because of his subject matter which just shows how narrow minded some reviewers are.

I like Dickens for the masterfully created interlinking Plots.
I can't really name that many authors though, because I haven't read that much (unfortunately).
Sir Arther Conan Doyle is pretty good too.
I also read a great thought provoking book by Philip Pullman called "Northern Lights", and its sequellion "The Subtle Knife"

Pleased Gollum enjoyed Peake, it was a tragedy he died before he completed the 3rd book. Fritz Leiber, M. Moorcock. Poul Anderson, Elaine Cunningham, R.E.Howard, enjoyed Troy Denning and Jack Vance.
