Oh man, I almost feel sorry for the guy. I'm not sure anybody deserves to have their life ruined over $125...

Especially considering that the guys at 4x4 emailed his university, posted on their forums, and raised ALOT of shit other Wenzel's parents. Ah well, stealing is wrong.

If you've got some time on your hands, this is a great read. Quick summary: Guy on Pirate4X4 advertises some gears he has for sale...$115 and they are brand new. Gets a check from another member and cashes it, then goes back and edits his original post to reflect a higher price. Pirate4x4 is famous for it's flame jobs and pack mentality and they go apeshit. The guy cops an attitude and it ends up that they post his name, address, phone numbers, etc. They also find out he has scammed other people on other boards and post that info. Then they discover the gears have 11k miles on them. Then they post his picture and his parent's and employer's addresses. About 3 days ago it gains an "internet life" and suffice it to say this 19yo kid has ruined his life. They know everything about him and it has gotten to some very dangerous and perverse sites. He'll never be able to go online again and he now has had his attempted fraud viewed by over 1 million people just in the last 2 days and it is really starting to snowball. It makes interesting reading because it shows that you are not as anonymous as you might think and how not to act and get cute with the wrong people. Scary stuff.
Well, you're only not anonymous to the people who know how to work with the loopholes of the Internet. I'd say 90 per cent of all Internet-users out there wouldn't know how to get to valuable or personal information of anyone.

Ziroc has the ability to find out who people are here on IW if you piss him off bad enough. In all the years I have been here, I've only seen him use this Shadow Power once. I cannot remember what the guy did...maybe it was a link to a virus, and Ziroc will not allow his website be used by morons to hurt others.

Interestingly, they brought the site off-line to try to bring it up to speed for the overload it's taking. Rumor was they were going to get slashdotted tomorrow, so the hammer may *really* fall.

Folks, remember that there is nothing unknown on the internet. Wherever your computer is, it connects to at least one other on its way out into the internet. And it's common to connect through five to ten without thinking twice... and each one knows your IP, and where you're trying to go. Ziroc has that knowledge for everything you request from IW, as does your ISP, his, and a few others in-between.

Anonymity is an illusion.

What's slashdotted mean?

I do feel sorry for this kid, but he's brought it on himself. Purely based on reading his posts, he reminds me lot of a friend of mine. He can't see why others get pissed off with his selfish scams either.

Check here for a Wikipedia entry that explains it nicely.

Slashdotted refers to getting your story posted on slashdot. It's a favored haven of geeks throughout the world for interesting news and stories... many tech-related, but some not.

If your site is posted, what then happens is the millions of slashdot readers check out the sites related to those five articles. The resulting attack of web page requests has been known to crash all but the most robust of servers...

... and when that happens, it's referred to as being slashdotted.

Wow! Like 10 busloads of geeks rocking up for dinner in a camper trailer. It's all in perspective now! Thanks B.
