Al di Meola is good.

Also have to put SRV, Carlos Santana and Hendrix on the list, but another personal favorite who I think is quite underrated, though massively technical in his style of play is Eric Johnson. I walked into a bar, heard three or four chords and immediately knew it was him, no question asked

I think there is a guitarist everyone seems to be forgetting! What about Eddy Van Halen?! He is the best guitarist I have heard in my personal opinion. And if you don't know why just listen to the song Eruption by Van Halen, it's basically one giant guitar solo.

It's not basically one giant guitar solo, it is one giant guitar solo, also known as a signature piece. I haven't forgotten him, and he is an amazing player. But there are guitar players, and then there are guitar players...Some one mentioned Di Meola up there somewhere, and yes, he was/is great, also people like Les Paul. You don't get a major guitar brand model named after you if you aren't that d*mn good.

Seeing how he put Yngwie Malmsteen in first place, it's a safe bet to say we're not talking about the former.

Trey Anastasio was listed as #73 by Rolling Stone, but I would put him higher than that -- I really like his stuff.

Hendrix was great for a guy on the front-end of new technology, such as the Wa Pedal, and perhaps he could've matered the technology in every subsequent evolution -- but sadly we will never know. The volume of work we have from him is impressive, but certainly not the best of anybody.

Na, we have not forgotten about him.....

I do believe the question asked for guitarist? Not some electro funk that any drunk could make some noise with right?

Therefore, we must look at guitarist' right? Then hands down, the man in black, walks the line.
Johhny Cash.

I would still go with Hendrix as No. 1 but at LAST someone gave some props to Jimmy Page! Stevie Ray Vaughn would be in my top five as well.

Gary Moore , definitely one of my favourites, and who could forget Rory Gallagher? And one for the girls, PJ harvey is a good guitarist, but her music is a little depressing.........
