Hmmm rereading the thread title...
why don't you just remove your HD and take it with you? It's smaller than a laptop and just install it into your new PC over there, if you get one?

I do use software called CopyToDVD (ironically) that works great for both DVD and CD Burning.
Hmm, maybe I should have read this before trying it. Nero seems to only burn DVDs and movie files (it's crap!). I'll check out that CopyToDVD thing.

Hmm. Good idea except for the fact that it probably won't fit into my new laptop, eh.

Hey Memnoch here is a quick link to the site of the company that makes CopyToDVD:

http://www.vso-software.fr/

I got CopyToDVD free with the 1ClickDVDCopy software that is designed to make backups of DVD movies. It works like DVD shrink but is more of a 1 click solution(duh).

When your in my neck of the woods, Memnoch, I can put your desktop HD into one of my PCs and copy your files to a laptop either through our home wireless network, or directly, or even indirectly via my 60GB Portable HD.

You have a wealth of options it seems, Memnoch!

Chewy, I tried that Copy To DVD thing and it'll do for now, in terms of making backups. As for data transfer if I end up getting my laptop here I'll go with Vask's suggestion of using a cable, if I have to buy it in the US I'll shell out on a USB HD. That'll keep 'em all happy, including myself.

Chewy, I managed to make a DVD backup of some files using that Copy to DVD thing and it seemed to do it ok (copied about 4GB of files) but how do I 1) view them to confirm they're there (you can't do it via Windows Explorer) ; and 2) how do I copy them back (ie if I had to copy them to my not-yet-existing laptop). Do I need to use the Copy To DVD thing to do that?
