Two things that I could think of to try:
Try your primary IDE contoller. It could be a problem with teh controller and not with the Burner.

Try going into the BIOS setup and telling it to use a slow PIO mode, rather then trying to autodetect. It is possible that the autodetection is screwing up.

If this is 4 years old it's high time for a new one, I'm sure it won't recognize half of the cds you try to copy.

Does it make a noise? Take the sides of your case and put your ear up to it when you start your PC (taking care to avoid lopping of your ear via the fan in the process.) You should hear it spinning; or not as the case may be.

I don't copy CDs. I only wrote linux CDs last year I have to get a laptop for uni so I won't upgrade much on this PC also because that would mean nearly buying a new one

Ross it works except that it doesn't get recognized. I took it out, it's spinning, it's playing CDs, it's opening and closing.

Still have to try your suggestions but I've got to go to school soon.
