Does anyone know the exact specs needed for a CPU to handle a geforce 6600gt? I'm wary about buying one if it can't run on my system PS-wise. Some sites tell me but I can't actually figure out exactly what my power supply is as there seems to be differences in wattage measurements(or maybe I'm simply being slow?). Also someone said a 2ghz processor would bottleneck a card like this, is it true? Thanks all.

As for the 2Ghz question, yes, it will bottle neck that card. As for power supply these new cards are sucking down the juice. The more watts your power supply can dish out the better. I certainly wouldn't have anything under 430w for these new cards. Also, not all power supplies are the same. Just because they *say* they are 430 watts doesn't mean they put out that much. Go with a dependable name brand such as Antec. There are other good ones.

Yup, a 450W PSU is neccesary for the computer to boot (Or so im told) and I have read it in multiple places anyway...
But what do you want that card for?? You should buy an X800XT if your going to buy a top end card ![]() |

Aha okay. Well I determined this system has a 250w supply so I am well under the spec as it is (350w bare they say). Now, I do have a new system that is 3.20ghz so I imagine that'll be fine, right? I am unsure of it's powersupply but I also imagine that to be sufficient (It's a new dell, haven't opened it up yet).
Also this new system has HT on it (never had a system with that so i'm a HT newb). Is it generally good to have it enabled and does it enhance gaming any? Or should I disable it when I set it up? Thanks for the help.

Hivetyrant if it's the ATI one I steer well clear of them, hehe. I won't get the top end Nvidia one either as from watching benches you get about +20-30% performance for more than double the price so imma go with something a little more affordable

It is only recommended to use HT were needed, mainly because most programs dont know how to use it, and this can cause problems...
Not problems that wil crash your computer, but problems with slowing down and so on... Though there are many games (Like perimiter) that use HT amazingly, plus it is excellent for Benchmarking (ups your score alot). But dont take my word for it, im not as experianced with Ht as many others here (I only used it for a few months) [ 02-13-2005, 09:39 PM: Message edited by: Hivetyrant ] |

The 6600GT is untouched in the price/performance ratio and destroys anything that ATI has in that price bracket.
For instance, the PNY Verto 6600GT is available from as little as £111 excluding VAT. What a cracking price. |

Power Supplies are not something to just have "over 450W". You can get power 600W Power supplies from ebuyer for £15, they are crap and probably wouldn't power this. Get yourself something such as the Tagan 480W PSU, or even the 420. This will be more than ample to handle this system.
PC World had a deal on 6600gt's a while back. They were only £100 incl. VAT. Shame they're finished though.

Spiritwarrior, Dell should be able to tell you the wattage of your power supply. They should also be able to tell you the maker of your power supply. That is a good card by nVidia.

Yeah, that what just what magazines were saying... As in 450W of raw power was needed or something along those lines...
Hmm also, my original posts were based on the 6800GT not the 6600GT I got confused as I dont focus on NVIDIA's naming system anymore. |
