That is interesting stuff.
Obviously very unfortunate for the poor little girl that's developed the rare disease, but I've never heard anything like this before. The body developed pain sensors for a reason, I can't imagine what everyday life would be like without it. So yes, i agree, seems more like a curse to me. Especially at that age. |

geez, thats gotta be interesting. never knowing exactly what pain is, just knowing its something bad. i mean, if you cant feel anything bad, than you can only imagine emotional pain, if she ever got cured, what would happen? thats like a color-blind person never knowing what the ither colors looked like, nor can he imagine.

I think it's an issue at any age. Pain is your body's way of saying something's wrong. If it can't tell you that... what might you accidentally do?

I don't know what to say. I can't imagine my life without the ability to "feel" hot, cold, pain or whatever. But then again sometimes it would be convinient. For example: you know that if you spill yourself with boiling water will most likely damage your skin so you go to the doctor anyway but you don't feel the exchrusiating (spelling?) pain that causes. All in all I would still prefer to feel something.

More seriously though, I've heard of this awful disorder, and I imagine that it's hard enough to keep a 5 year old out of danger anyway without the added danger of being unable to feel heat, cold, or pain. People with this (or a similar) disorder have a problem later on in life with joint pain because they constantly keep uncomfortable positions and don't realize it. Of course it's not 'joint pain', but it's joints that just aren't strong enough to support normal function. They also seem to age faster than everyone else because of the constant wear-and-tear on their joints and body, not to mention the potential for bad accidents reducing their life expectancy to the mid-30's. |

I've heard different things, but I didn't think this disease existed. Being a winter person like I am, its a big plus being able to feel the cold, but not being able to feel cold, heat, or pain altogether, that really would be a disastrous upbringing.
