I think it's practically part of the whole Cavalier mythos to fight with a sword and shield. Carsomyr has always struck me as the ideal weapon for normal holy Paladins, but the Cavalier to my mind has an element of derring-do that makes him stand out from the Holy Preacher Warrior crowd.
You could indeed try Bastard Swords. If you can't fight through to get the sword mentioned above, you can get a decent Bastard Sword and some other cheerful Paladin-inspired items by finishing just the first level of Watcher's Keep. [ 04-08-2003, 09:17 PM: Message edited by: Tancred ]

Technically under the rules, a Cavalier is required to use a shield to carry his coat of arms and because a shield symbolizes defense. They are forbidden to use two handed weapons.
Nice to see somebody roleplaying and policing themselves. |

Yes, totally agree about the Paladins shouldn't use 2-handed weapons thing. I generally picture 2-handed weapons as being for berserker type fighters or barbarians, not the well-manered and politically correct paladin. And when you think about it, a cavralir (sp?) is supposed to be the famous dragon fighting hero, and really, have you EVER seen a picture of a knight fighting a dragon without a shield? Probably not.

in 1st edition when Unearthed arcana came out there was a specific prohibition against cavaliers (of which paladins were a subclass) using range weapons, including missile weapons, polearms, and two handed swords, i've always felt the best way to roleplay the paladin was along the same lines, and though i rarely rp a PnP cavalier, i tend to stay away from ranged weapons for rp reasons

Even mounted on horseback, the Cavalier used a shield along with his lance.
A shield is what defines a Cavalier. Remember the AD&D cartoons? The kid that got turned into a Cavalier got a shield as his main weapon. One thing missing from the Cavalier's list of attacks was the shield bash. Small shields did tiny amounts of damage, while large shields could be quite brutal. The magical defensive value of a shield determined the to hit. (A +3 Shield of Defense for example, could hit Liches and Greater Mummies) The damage was only so so, the real use for shield bashing was the chance to either disarm your foe or stun them. |
