As a Fighter/Mage, Cast & Attack should be a second nature to you.

Good spells to use at this stage include in no particular order,

1) Melf's Minute Meteors
2) Emotion
3) Greater Malison
4) Spook
5) Spell Immunity
6) Stoneskin
7) Skull Trap
8) Mirror Image

This should cover your Anti-Trap Tactics and combat spells too, mostly.

Dak'kon's Zerth Blade, a Katana, is a good item to buy too, from Deidre in the Adventurer's Mart. Unless you intend to fight the Cowled Wizards or pay them, cast your buffing spells like Stoneskin inside houses.

If it is night-time, consider staying in an inn until it is daylight to avoid the Vampires.
I've got 1,6,7,8. So I got like half of the spells (maybe even spook and emotion as well, but I can't quite remember). Problem is that those guys chop so hard, the bash right through my Stoneskin. As for which item's to use; I thought of the following:

Robe of Vecna (great for faster casting speed)
Ring of Gaxx (duh!)
Ring of Wizardry (not to sure about that as it only provides an additional level 4 and 5 spell.. Maybe Ring of Earth Control (+1 AC), or the Ring of Acuity is better)
Boots of Speed (kinda obvious)
Bracers of Defense AC 3 (for some protection I need)
Cloak of Mirroring (duh as well )
Helmet of Balduran (adds +1 to AC, but maybe that helmet Deidre sells Vhailor's Helm, which adds +1 to AC *and* allows Cast Simulacrum once a day)

As weapons; Staff of the Magi and perhaps for ranged Sling of Everard.

So whaddaya think?

As no one replied yet to my questions, and because I have a new one, I'm bumping this topic.
Possible Spoilers to follow!

So far things are going quite well. My fighter/mage Juil'lan is performing quite well; favorite spells are definitely getting Haste-Stoneskin-Melf's Minute Meteorites-Skull Trap. So far no single enemy has been able to keep on living after he encountered moi (okay, I admit, some enemies did take a few reloads, but that's ok for as first time, IMHO )

So what have I done already? Cleared the entire Copper Coronet *and* Slaver Ship of all slaving activities. Solved the riddle in the sewers for Lilarcor (I can dream the solution, I think ) And last but not least, just this morning I gave good ol' TorGal a decent spanking (he wasn't so tough after all; had more trouble with the splitting troll and Yuan-Ti Mage in the library, AND the corrupted guard with the flailhead).

As you can tell I'm pretty impressed so far by what I've done. Of course, I also tried to pick some stupid fight. I had never done the Guarded Compound before, so I trampled on in, and tried to whack everyone there (was expecting something like the Twisted Rune fight), but instead there was this whining bastard Sion who teleported away. So I trampled about, trying to steal things when all of the sudden --zap-- Ten summons (baatezu, nishruu, ettercap, ogre, and some more) appeared out of the blue and smited my all the way into Oblivion. Never came back since.
I also tried to beat the Cowled Wizards, but they too have proven themselves a bit too hard for my poor fighter/mage. Too bad. I love the smell of burnt Cowled Wizard in the morning, don't you Tolgerias?

Now for my question; as a fighter/mage, what is your stronghold?? I thought I would get two strongholds or something, but IIRC you can get only one. And Nalia gave me the keep as soon as I cleared it of the troll infestation. Not knowing if I would get another offer (the Planar Sphere) I accepted it, but could I have gotten that one?

You can only get one. However I hear that if you tell Nalia you will think about it and then go to the mage one and accept that you can go back to her and accept the castle. So that means you can get 2 but it may cause bugs. Anyway I reccomend the Planar sphere because it is by far the more interesting place to be.

You're suggesting the Multiple Stronghold one, I suspect? As it is said on the site itself; "many people may see this as cheating". I'm one of those people so making the game easier (with this mod) is not what I plan to do. Thanks anyway!

Not too bad, and rather decent too. As a Fighter/Mage, you will be spoilt for choice on what to wear.

Armour: Robe of Vecna for that nifty ability to cast Combat Protections in a pinch
Gloves: I would prefer Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise actually, then Gauntlets of Extraordinary Specialisation( ToB)
Helm: Helm of Balduran or the Netheril Circlet( ToB)
Amulet: Amulet of Power, hug this in a deathgrip.
Rings: Ring of Gaxx, Ring of Free Action, Ring of Wizardry, Ring of Acuity, Ring of Earth Control
Cloak: Cloak of Mirroring, Cloak of Non-Detection
Boots: Boots of Speed
Belt: Girdle of ~~ Giant Strength

Weapons depend on what weapon-type proficiencies you chose to pick. Katanas are the most common though, due to Celestial Fury + Dak'kon Zerth Blade.

Tips for you:
-Pack some Gem Bags
-Pack some Scroll Cases
-Don't try to take on more than you can handle
-Stop at stores whenever you come across them in order to sell Items and free up inventory space.
-Whenever you come across some weapon that you can use and it's better than the one you have now (magical or otherwise) use it!

Well, that's all then. I wish you luck!
